Conserving heritage is always a topic of discussion on World Heritage Day. To commemorate the occasion, a plethora of events unfolds, ranging from exhibitions showcasing the unique cultural and natural heritage of diverse regions, to cultural events spotlighting the traditions and customs of local communities, and guided tours offering insights into the history and significance of heritage sites. However, the fervor surrounding these discussions often diminishes soon after the day concludes. To sustain this discourse and foster a connection between heritage and the youth, social media emerges as a powerful tool.

Meet Bharat Singh, the man behind ‘Jaipur Houses’, a popular Instagram page dedicated to appreciating the vanishing beauty of Jaipur’s old houses and structures. Through captivating imagery and insightful narratives, Singh ignites a renewed appreciation for Jaipur’s heritage among a diverse audience. The allure of Jaipur Houses lies in its ability to transform passive scrolling into an immersive journey through time. Each post serves as a window into the past, inviting viewers to rediscover the stories embedded within the city’s walls. More than just a collection of photographs, Jaipur Houses sparks dialogue and engagement. Followers share memories, anecdotes, and even personal connections to the featured landmarks — be it the houses, streets, the shops or even the motifs one finds on the houses in the Pink City — breathing new life into forgotten narratives.

A Passion for Preservation

From an early age, Singh displayed a penchant for writing, coupled with a voracious appetite for reading. His fascination with Jaipur led him to devour every book available on the city, nurturing a deep understanding of its rich heritage. Singh’s journey into documenting and preserving Jaipur’s architectural heritage digitally began with a simple passion: capturing the essence of old things. With a keen eye for detail and a fascination for the past, he found himself drawn to the weathered charm of ancient houses, each telling a story of bygone eras. Residing in an old house himself, Singh experienced firsthand the magic of living within walls steeped in history. It was when his sister welcomed a newborn, that the idea of creating an archive took root. Recognizing that future generations might not have the opportunity to experience their ancestral home, Singh embarked on a mission to preserve its memory for posterity.

“The idea was not to start an Instagram page,” Singh recalls, “but just to document our family house where three generations have lived, so that the memories can be kept alive.” Thus, Jaipur Houses was born in 2022, initially envisioned as a private archive the future generations of the family. However, what began as a personal project soon evolved into a public endeavour as the page garnered unexpected attention. Within a mere two years, Jaipur Houses has amassed a devoted following of over 30,000 odd people, drawn to its captivating portrayal of Jaipur’s heritage.

In 2022, when the page took its fledgling steps, only two similar initiatives—Delhi Houses and Calcutta Houses—existed. Venturing into the streets with his phone camera, Singh encountered both curiosity and resistance and he had to explain his motives to skeptical onlookers. “Sometimes people used to get angry and ask what I am doing. I used to get called out as being sneaky. Once, I even faced a rebuke from a guard at Mahilya Chikistalaya for photographing the premises, citing potential safety concerns.”, he recalls. Yet, as the page gained traction, attitudes shifted. Today, invitations to document old houses pour in, which is a testament to the growing recognition of Jaipur Houses as an apt repository of city’s heritage. Enthusiasts across the city also actively contribute by sharing their own discoveries. “Whenever someone stumbles upon an old house, they click pictures and send me or they tag me on their posts”, he adds

Beyond Instagram Aesthetics

Driven by his innate eye for design, Singh initially intended to focus on documenting houses outside the walled city. Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, Singh assumed that significant efforts must have been made for the documentation of the buildings there. But he soon realized that there is a treasure trove of old buildings and structures inside the walled city that is being brought down at a huge speed. “A lot of old houses and buildings have already been broken down,” he notes, underscoring the imperative to document them before they vanish into oblivion. He also manages another page titled ‘Jodhpur Houses,’ stemming from his frequent visits to the city and his familial connections with cousins residing there. Even though it is not as active as Jaipur Houses, he envisions collaborating with his cousins to curate content and maintain the page.

Down the line, the ace instagrammer envisions creating a coffee table book comprising multiple volumes, dedicated to showcasing the old houses, buildings, and other structures of the Pink City.”The journey of raising awareness has only just begun,” remarks Singh, who emphasizes the current perception of the page as primarily a ‘cool’ platform for featuring heritage. However, his aspirations extend far beyond mere admiration. Singh hopes for a future where individuals or organizations that have the financial withstanding, invest in and restore these historic buildings, ensuring that heritage preservation transcends mere aesthetics and becomes a tangible reality.

The Pink City’s multi arts center, Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) recently played host to an exuberant gathering of young minds and literary enthusiasts at the two-day Bookaroo Children’s Literature Festival. The event saw an overwhelming turnout of children and parents alike, all eager to immerse themselves in the world of stories, creativity, and imagination. In fact, a couple even travelled all the way from Delhi so that their children could partake in the event. Despite the soaring mercury, laughter echoed through the Kendra’s dome area as children eagerly made their way to the different festival venues, their faces beaming with anticipation.

The first day of the festival kicked off with a flurry of activities, with children eagerly participating in 26 different engagements tailored to their interests and age groups. From storytelling sessions to craft corners, doodle walls to theatrical performances, there was something for every young mind to explore and indulge in. Over the course of two days, there were 50 sessions with 27 speakers.

The festival grounds were meticulously divided and colour coded into various zones according to different age groups, each offering a unique experience. The Kahani Kund created in the amphitheater, adorned with vibrant hues and puppets, transported children into a realm of storytelling magic. Here, they were regaled with tales spun by master storytellers who breathed life into the characters with their enchanting narratives.

Meanwhile, the Krishnayan auditorium witnessed the transformation of young participants into budding thespian under the guidance of drama director Abhishek Mudgal. Here, they learned the art of voice modulation and theatrical expression, delving into the world of drama and performance.

Throughout the festival, children were encouraged to unleash their creativity in various workshops and interactive sessions. From crafting intricate pieces in the Craft Corner to expressing themselves on the Doodle Wall, every corner of the festival resonated with the hum of creativity.

Swati Roy, the Festival Director of Bookaroo, emphasized the profound impact of literature on children’s lives, highlighting the importance of nurturing a love for reading from an early age. “Books are children’s best friends,” she remarked, underscoring the role of literature in shaping young minds and fostering empathy and understanding.

In today’s fast-paced world, where parents express concern about their children drifting away from academics, it is imperative that we reevaluate our approach. Writers possess a unique ability to connect with children, as they intricately weave emotions and experiences into words, offering a perspective that resonates deeply with young minds. The Bookaroo Festival serves as a platform to introduce children to these insightful authors, providing them with the opportunity to explore literature that speaks directly to their hearts and imaginations.

The Pink City is renowned globally for its finely crafted jewelry by skilled craftsmen and artisans, especially its Meenakari artifacts and jewellery. Meenakari involves painting and colouring metal and ceramic surfaces through enameling, with its origins traced back to the Parthian and Sassanid period of Iranian history. The technique flourished during the Safavid era in 15th-century Iran, and was introduced to India by the Mughals, who refined it, making designs more intricate. Rajasthan and Gujarat are celebrated for their Meenakari artifacts and jewelry. Jaipur is now home to the Museum of Meenakari Heritage (MOMH), the first of its kind, dedicated to preserving and celebrating this ancient art form.

Preserving the spirit & process of Meenakari

Sprawled over 3000 sq. ft in the prime area of C-Scheme, the museum is an initiative of the House of Sunita Shekhawat.  It pays tribute to the mastery and skill of countless artisans who have carried forward the ancient craft of Meenakari through the centuries. Over 300 images were obtained from over 15 premier museums, private collections, art galleries and auction houses worldwide, charting the nuanced history of enamelling from Renaissance Europe to its arrival in India. These include the British Museum, V&A Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Al-Thani Collection, Aga Khan Museum, The Hermitage and Sotheby’s to name a few. The House of Shekhawat produced over 120 reproductions which serve as a priceless repository of archival motifs, styles and oral histories related to the craft. The myriad forms of enamelling are further explored in the 60 original pieces by Sunita Shekhawat. Her work, alongside that of the many unnamed craftsmen that precede and follow her, forms the lifeblood of this gallery. The gallery preserves both the process and spirit of Meenakari.

To educate, inspire and experience

The museum is curated by the noted art historian Usha R Balakrishnan and designed by Siddhartha Das Studio. A palette of ivory, maroon, and brown punctuated by teak wood, red sandstone and antique brass sets the tone of the space. Painstakingly hand painted ceilings and latticed jharokhas capture old world Jaipur. Locally sourced materials and heritage inspired design embody the spirit of Made in India. “The ambition is to create a space where history, art and culture coalesce — a place where visitors can be educated and inspired, and where the artistry of enamelling is not just seen but experienced”, says Usha R Balakrishnan.

Through a carefully curated narrative, intuitive design and exceptional images, the gallery preserves not only the physical embodiments of this tradition but also celebrates the intangible — its spirit, its ingenuity, and its power to captivate and inspire.

The Museum of Meenakari Heritage is open for public.

Stepping into a patisserie, bakery, or even browsing through a home kitchen’s Instagram page, one is often left perplexed, surrounded by a plethora of tempting treats, unsure of what to choose. In this culinary cacophony, finding a singular passion amidst a sea of options is a rarity. Meet Neha Baheti, a woman who defies the norm with her singular dedication to perfecting one delicacy: Tiramisu. Let’s know more about The Boozy Tiramisu.

A PR and Branding professional by profession, Neha’s journey into the realm of gourmet desserts was an unexpected pivot catalyzed by the peculiar circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. Encouraged by the praise of friends for her rendition of Tiramisu, in 2021 she decided to transform her passion into a venture, christening it ‘The Boozy Tiramisu’.

Neha Baheti, founder of Boozy Tiramisu

Reflecting on the genesis of her venture, Neha explains, “The Tiramisu available in Jaipur often lacks the quintessential alcohol integral to its recipe. Moreover, it tends to be excessively laden with cream.” Determined to rectify this culinary injustice, Neha set out to craft Tiramisu according to her own exacting standards. Central to her culinary alchemy is the homemade cheese derived from A2 milk sourced from her family farm, lending a distinct richness to her creations.

In a refreshing departure from conventional marketing strategies, Neha steered clear of elaborate branding exercises, relying instead on the power of word-of-mouth within the close-knit community of Jaipur. “In a city like Jaipur, the quality of your product speaks volumes. If your product is good, the word about it will spread and it will do well,” Neha reflects on the unique dynamics of running a small-scale enterprise in the Pink City.

Neha’s commitment to specialization remains steadfast, with Tiramisu remaining the sole focus of her culinary repertoire. However, owing to the dietary preferences of Jaipur’s populace, she found it necessary to incorporate alcohol-free and eggless options into her offerings. For her regular clients who might want some variation in the tiramisu, there are options like pistachio, chocolate, strawberry and mango tiramisu. However, it is the classic rendition that reigns supreme.

The boozy tiramisu in jars

Speaking of trends, Neha has been at the forefront of introducing Tiramisu cakes for celebratory occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and bridal showers. “Traditionally, Tiramisu is served in a dish. However, alongside traditional servings, I also offer cakes and jars. Initially, Tiramisu wasn’t perceived as a cake option, but this trend has now gained significant traction in Jaipur,” Neha notes, reflecting on her role in popularizing this innovative twist on the classic dessert.

Since Neha personally handles all orders, The Boozy Tiramisu is exclusively available through pre-order. Connect with her via Instagram at @theboozytiramisu to indulge in her delectable creations.

Just 30 kilometers from Jaipur, in Bassi lies a sanctuary that breathes life into tales of resilience and compassion. Among its residents are Ranu, a 14-year-old blind and abandoned camel, Rani, a former circus star now liberated from captivity, and Blackie, rescued from a slaughter-bound fate in Shahjahanpur. These camels find solace and care at the Camel Rescue Centre, an initiative by Help in Suffering (HIS) established in 2011.

As reports signal a concerning decline in Indian single-humped camel populations, HIS steps up as a frontline champion. Their Camel Welfare Project spans urban centers and remote regions, providing essential veterinary care, including locations like Jaisalmer and the Pushkar Camel Fair. With the United Nations designating 2024 as the International Year of Camelids, underscoring their significance in human livelihoods, HIS’s Camel Welfare Programme emerges as a vital player. Through direct interventions, community training, and rescue efforts, HIS ensures the health and welfare of these vital animals, treating over 5000 camels annually.

A Beacon of Hope
Sharing more about this initiative, Managing Trustee of Help in Suffering, Timmie Kumar says: “Recognizing the dire need for veterinary services in remote areas, HIS embarked on a mission to build a Camel Rescue Centre and in 2011, with the support of the ELSU Foundation from Switzerland, the HIS Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) emerged in the village of Bassi. This marked Jaipur’s first specialized camel treatment hub, equipped to provide comprehensive care. Here, camels find solace and healing, with a dedicated resident veterinary surgeon and support staff. The CRC team also operates a mobile clinic to provide veterinary care and advice to camel owners in a large number of villages around Bassi.”

Founder, Timmie Kumar (Right) and Dr. Jitendra at the Camel Rescue Centre

Compassionate Care
The Camel Welfare Programme extends a lifeline to the most impoverished village communities, where access to veterinary services for working camels is virtually non-existent. In and around Jaipur, camels are indispensable for pulling carts, particularly among families struggling on the outskirts with scant access to local veterinary care. For these families, whose livelihoods hinge on the labor of their camels, the inability of a sick animal to work means a loss of daily wages.

Encountering a range of ailments including lameness, diarrhea, colic, impaction, urinary, and respiratory problems, the HIS team ensures timely and comprehensive veterinary care through well-publicized camps and mobile clinics. This approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also promotes the long-term well-being of camels. In addition to providing essential medical treatment, HIS undertakes measures to improve the safety and welfare of camels. This includes replacing traditional nose pegs with humane alternatives and equipping carts with reflectors to reduce road accidents. Furthermore, HIS offers community training, empowering owners with the knowledge and skills needed to care for their animals effectively, thereby ensuring their continued health and vitality.

The dying art of Kavad making taught at JKK https://allaboutjaipur.com/kavad-art/8063/ https://allaboutjaipur.com/kavad-art/8063/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 07:45:50 +0000 https://allaboutjaipur.com/?p=8063 Jawahar Kala Kendra's Kavad making workshop offered participants a journey through Rajasthan's cultural heritage, blending tradition with innovation. From centuries-old techniques to contemporary adaptations, attendees explored the rich history of this art form, celebrating the legacy of craftsmanship and storytelling in a fusion of past and present.

The wooden-painted Kavad stands as a testament to Rajasthan’s unique cultural heritage, deeply rooted in the art of storytelling. Functioning as both a mobile storytelling device and a temporary temple, the Kavad represents a harmonious blend of carpentry, painting, and narration. Within this intricate craft, distinct professions converge: the carpenter, known as a Suthar, the artist, referred to as a Chitrakar, and the storyteller, known as a Bhat. Together, these artisans collaborate to bring the Kavad to life, with the carpenter and artist meticulously crafting its physical form, while the Kavadia Bhats breathe soul into its narratives. This revered tradition finds its home exclusively in the village of Bassi, situated in the Chittorgarh District of Rajasthan.

Jawahar Kala Kendra recently hosted a 4-day Kavad-making workshop. Led by instructors Dwarika Prasad Suthar and Govind Lal Suthar, hailing from Bassi, Chittorgarh, participants delved into the historical roots of Kavad making, a tradition spanning over 500 years. As descendants of the Suthar and Chitrakar communities, these instructors brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the workshop, guiding attendees through the process of crafting these exquisite wooden marvels.

A legacy of 500 years

Dwarika Prasad Suthar, recipient of the President’s Award for his expertise in Kavad making, highlighted the enduring legacy of this folk art form, spanning over 500 years. He noted that historically, individuals from the Bhat community commissioned skilled artisans from Bassi, Chittorgarh, to create Kavads adorned with religious narratives. These portable storytelling devices, carried by bards known as Kavadiya Bhaat, served as both entertainment and a means of religious dissemination. Over time, Kavad construction evolved to include contemporary themes, reflecting current societal contexts. Suthar emphasized the importance of workshops in preserving such ancient arts, drawing upon his five decades of experience in Kavad craftsmanship. However, he lamented the decline in Kavad recitals due to changing times, with the tradition now primarily associated with decorative purposes in the digital age.

Enriching experience for participants

The participants of the workshop had the opportunity to explore the symbolism intricately woven into every detail of the Kavad. From depicting ancient religious tales including the depiction of Dashavatar, the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Kavads now also convey modern-day messages such as awareness of traffic rules and social causes like saving the girl child. Through hands-on learning experiences, attendees not only refined their craftsmanship but also contributed to the preservation of an endangered art form.

Priyanka Baweja, a workshop participant, expressed her appreciation for JKK’s initiative, emphasizing its role in revitalizing the state’s heritage and bridging the gap between past traditions and future generations. Reflecting on her experience, she shared that the workshop commenced with an introduction to the fundamentals of Kavad, its significance, and objectives. Subsequently, participants delved into practical aspects such as colour selection and techniques for drawing body figures, fostering a deeper understanding of this traditional art form. With only three families left who continue the legacy of Kavad making, workshops like these play a crucial role in keeping this ancient tradition alive.

Jaipur Reads: A community that is not your typical book club https://allaboutjaipur.com/jaipurreads/8032/ https://allaboutjaipur.com/jaipurreads/8032/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 08:01:06 +0000 https://allaboutjaipur.com/?p=8032 Beyond the bustling events of Jaipur, discover the silent revolution of Jaipur Reads. In the vibrant cultural landscape of Jaipur, where literature events and festivals abound, there is a distinctive community that deviates from the typical book club norm, offering an unconventional haven for book lovers – ‘Jaipur Reads.’

This literary initiative, born last year in July, has blossomed into a gathering that marries the tranquility of libraries with the warmth of home. Founded by by Nishkant and Karan Beniwal in Jaipur, the community started with a modest four participants but has since grown steadily, with an average attendance of 15-20 members every Sunday morning.

What sets Jaipur Reads apart is its departure from the expected book club dynamics. In a city teeming with cultural events like art, theater, and the famed Jaipur Literature Festival, this community embraces a serene reading experience. Unlike the traditional book club setting, where members discuss a predetermined book, Jaipur Reads fosters a sense of community without the need for active conversations during reading sessions.

The roots of this community can be traced back to Cubbon Reads in Bangalore, where Shruti Sah and Harsh Snehanshu began a silent reading ritual every Saturday in Cubbon Park in December 2022. Their initiative, posted on social media, sparked a movement that has now reached over 70 cities worldwide. In July 2023, Nishkant and Karan, inspired by Cubbon Reads, brought this reading revolution to Jaipur.

The membership of Jaipur Reads spans a diverse spectrum, currently ranging from 18 years to 45 years, encompassing voracious readers, writers, and newcomers alike. Inclusive and beginner-friendly, the community offers a platform for those who seek solace in the written word, like Karan, who, due to his shy nature, had been hesitant to join other book clubs in the past. “There are no forced conversations or awkward small talk during these sessions. Participants are free to come and go as they please, with no subscription charges. Held in a park, the sessions are accessible to everyone, providing a much-needed respite from hectic schedules amid nature and sunlight”, tells Karan.

Beyond the pages of books, Jaipur Reads has become a catalyst for forming connections. The community has birthed another group, ‘Jaipur Paints,’ and members often extend their camaraderie by going for coffee or tea after the reading session. Even as the co-founder, Nishkant, moved away from Jaipur for his educational pursuits, Karan continues to nurture and expand the community, ensuring its longevity. “The group members are also well versed with the activities that are currently being carried out by me such as keeping the instagram page active or making other members feel comfortable when they come. So even if I am not there for a few weeks or if I decide to move out of Jaipur, anyone else from the group can easily take up my role”, elaborates Karan.

For Anshi, who has been a part of Jaipur Reads since its inception, the experience can be encapsulated in one word – ‘joy.’ “The joy of reading under the open sky, the joy of companionship, and the joy of forming lasting connections. This community has not only rekindled my love for reading but has also brought beautiful connections into my life”, says Anshi.

As Jaipur Reads looks to the future, the vision is clear – to become the go-to community for anyone looking to embark on a reading journey. It is not just about the books; it is about finding joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging in the quiet communion of fellow book lovers under the Jaipur sky.

In a harmonious blend of artistry and environmental consciousness, Jaipur is hosting a one-of-its-kind art exhibition, bridging communities and creativity. From October 7 to October 15, the Kishan Bagh in Vidyadhar Nagar, has become a canvas for the ‘Threatened Species Threatened Spaces’ (TSTS) project, an inspiring initiative orchestrated by Alliance Française Jaipur and supported by the French Institute Paris and The French Institute in India.

Setting the Stage

Renowned French artist and environmentalist Anaïs Beaulieu takes the spotlight in this innovative exhibition. Having embarked on a remarkable journey across four Indian cities – Trivandrum, Delhi, Pune, and finally Jaipur, Anaïs collaborated closely with local communities. Together, they identified endangered flora and fauna native to each region, infusing life into plastic bags through intricate embroidery. This unique act of artistic resistance emerged as a response to the looming climate crisis, symbolizing resilience and hope.

French artist and environmentalist Anaïs Beaulieu with a community of women from Ramsar Palawala village near Jaipur.

Art for a cause

At the heart of this immersive artist workshop lies a noble objective – to engage with local communities deeply impacted by various threats. Whether facing imminent endangerment or valiantly working to mitigate natural and man-made challenges, these communities have become the focal point of Anaïs’s artistic endeavors. Collaboratively, they transformed collected waste into stunning works of art, embellishing the fabric of their cities with imprints of threatened spaces. Through this artistry, the exhibition delves into the profound implications of disappearance and change, weaving a powerful narrative of environmental consciousness.

Glimpse of Art

In the weeks leading up to the exhibition, Anaïs collaborated with the People’s Awareness Network Society (PANS) NGO, an organization dedicated to skill enhancement and income generation in the Ramsar Palawala village near Jaipur. Together, they harnessed the transformative power of art, empowering a community of women to create extraordinary pieces. These creations, born from the hands of the resilient women of Ramsar Palawala village, most of whose husbands lost stable employment during the pandemic, stand testament to the beauty that emerges when creativity and purpose intersect.

Telling more about the initiative, Director of Alliance Française, Jaipur, Sanjana Sarkar says: “The project “threatened species//threatened spaces” is a statement of artistic resistance. The global climate crisis would not be solved in a day, and even less possibility that an embroidery project would lead us in that direction. We understand that. But what this project envisages is to create slow, collective grassroots efforts that perhaps bring attention to what is the effect of our global actions on smaller communities, and in spite of the pretty bleak situation, there are groups and individuals making one last attempt to make things better. Anais and the communities across Trivandrum, Delhi, Pune and in Jaipur, are showcasing the power of dialogue, exchange and art.”

(LtoR) Director of Alliance Francaise of Jaipur, Sanjana Sarkar; French artist and environmentalist Anaïs Beaulieu and CEO of People’s Awareness Network Society (PANS), Mr Jitendra Singh

A Call to Witness

Talking about this project, Anais Beaulieu said, “The project speaks of the need to rethink our connections with the “living” and to include ourselves in it, not as a superior being but rather as part of a whole. Learn to live together. Because we no longer have the choice to continue to do what we have done for the past centuries. Respect the territories of the other as the one on which we walk without setting borders.”

Jaipur, the final stop on this transformative artistic circuit, beckons art enthusiasts, environmentalists, and the curious-minded to witness this extraordinary exhibition. Beyond the aesthetic allure, it serves as a profound reminder of our shared responsibility to protect threatened species and spaces. Dr. Sushma Mahajan, a practicing radiologist from Jaipur, has carved a unique niche for herself as a self-taught watercolour artist during the lockdown. Her impressive record of five exhibitions held in both Jaipur and Delhi over a span of less than three years is testament to the fact that her fervour for painting burns as brightly as her professional dedication.

Artist Dr. Sushma Mahajan

The exquisite Maharani Mahal, nestled within the opulent Rambagh Palace’s Sawai Man Mahal, played host to Dr. Mahajan’s latest exhibition. The regal surroundings lent an unmatched charm to her meticulously crafted artworks, creating a perfect backdrop for a journey through the ‘Spectrum of Life.’

‘Spectrum of Life,’ as the exhibition was aptly named, transported viewers into a world where the canvas became a window to diverse realms of existence. From majestic art and architecture to the untamed beauty of animals and the serenity of landscapes, Dr. Mahajan’s paintings captured the essence of life in all its forms.

Yet, her art goes beyond the canvas; it offers glimpses into the intricacies of her own life. Visitors to the exhibition discovered insights about her family, such as her daughter’s affinity for the guitar and her husband’s penchant for Irish beer. These personal touches added depth to the already profound experience of exploring her art.

A mere glance at Dr. Mahajan’s paintings reveals her remarkable ability to enchant viewers with paintings showcasing the innocence of squirrels as well as the fierceness of mighty predators. Her true genius, however, lies in her mastery of capturing the essence of the human eye. In her compositions, eyes come to life, speaking volumes through their nuanced expressions.Precision is the hallmark of Dr. Mahajan’s work. Whether she is meticulously contouring the lines of vintage cars, capturing the anatomical perfection of horses, or recreating the geometric elegance of architectural wonders, her attention to detail is second to none. It is this precision that breathes life into her compositions, drawing the viewer into a world where realism reigns supreme.

Below are some of our favourite picks from her exhibition and their evocative descriptions, penned by her husband, Naveen Mahajan:

The Irish Pub

There are sworn lovers for the extremely dark hued Guinness beer – my husband is one of them and he got introduced to this Irish beer in Canada through his hostel day friend. I loved the architectural façade of the pub with an interesting wall clock and slogan – After Work is Guinness Time!

Guitar
Music can never be away from an artist – I get fascinated  particularly when anyone plays guitar beautifully. My daughter is quite proficient in making her guitar literally “sing” and I cherish that smile getting bigger on her face each time she picks up her guitar.  Here is my artistic ode to this splendid instrument – I wanted it to stand out against these rusted corroded nuts and bolts.

Tender Moment

This is my artwork which emanates love and affection. An adorable pair of snuggling horses. Two pretty souls stealing tender moments of togetherness. Watch out for the details crafted in doing the mane and the coat pattern of this Pinto pair.

Curves to Kill

Vintage cars have a fascination of their own. They evoke nostalgic memories of an era when each automobile was crafted and designed rather than mass produced as is the case today. Each vintage car has an exciting story behind it like the one I am presenting – this French made luxury car of 1938 vintage was a rage in Europe – just about a dozen were made and barely 6-7 survive today.

Tiger’s Fury

To an ardent lover of wild life, there is no visual delight to match the magnificence of the tiger in the wild. And here is the ferocious big cat roaring aloud in supreme fury..Can you spot the fire his eyes? The canines in his jaw wide opened are the showstoppers..The close up composition is to accentuate the viewing impact.

Marvel in Stone

This exquisite artwork is my tribute to the glorious temple architecture of our country. This is the Chariot temple which stands out in the ruins of Hampi. Built 500 years ago by the Vijaynagar kings, it appears to be made out of a single rock but the architects of those time had the acumen to smartly conceal the linkages of granite slabs with artistic skill. It has been a real painstaking effort to artistically reproduce the magnificent charm of this Garuda temple – it is my Magnum Opus.

Amid the turbulent seas of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the world grappled with confinement and pervasive negativity, Dr. Sushma Mahajan embarked on a transformative odyssey. A seasoned medical professional with over three decades of commitment to her career, Dr. Mahajan ventured into the realm of art. Little did she anticipate that her newfound hobby would catalyze a remarkable journey, characterized by a string of successful exhibitions and a growing demand for her art, all while maintaining her steadfast dedication to her medical profession.

An Artistic Awakening

Dr. Mahajan’s artistic journey began when her daughter’s fine arts school project required a water colour poster. To help her daughter with the project, she started watching online tutorials. The lockdown in March 2020 , which followed soon after, presented an unexpected opportunity for her to delve deeper into painting. However, her early works were hampered by limited supplies of paint and paper. Undeterred, she persevered and, once the lockdown lifted, invested in high-quality materials that elevated the quality of her art.

Finessing her skills

With each stroke of the brush, Dr. Mahajan’s skills improved, and she embraced the learning process, taking valuable lessons from her mistakes. Her husband’s encouragement and support and the values instilled in her by her father—punctuality, discipline, and hard work—played a pivotal role in honing her artistic abilities. She also sought feedback from an online global fine arts review website, gaining helpful insights into her work.

Dr. Sushma Mahajan initially aspired to decorate her home with a few framed paintings. However, her ambition quickly expanded as she finished a whopping 100 paintings by January 2021. This led to her first solo exhibition in March 2021, which featured an impressive collection of 72 paintings. Remarkably, 50 of these pieces found new homes within just two days of the exhibition’s opening. This milestone marked the beginning of an extraordinary artistic journey and there was no looking back from there. In a mere four months, she curated her next exhibition, showcasing a captivating collection of 50 paintings, and it was met with resounding success, selling out in its entirety. To date, Dr. Mahajan has orchestrated an impressive total of six exhibitions, including a prestigious showcase at the India Habitat Center in New Delhi.

Art as Liberation

Amid the rigorous demands of the medical profession, Dr. Sushma Mahajan discovered solace and liberation in art. After her daily 9-to-5 medical duties, she dedicates 2 to 3 hours every day to painting. While initially favouring safe subjects like still life and nature, she later embraced the challenge of portraits and landscapes. Her artistic style leans towards realism, aiming to evoke feelings of positivity and happiness in her viewers, transporting them into the world depicted on her canvas. On an average, she completes one painting per week.

Spectrum of Life

As Dr. Mahajan prepares for her seventh exhibition, to be held at Jaipur’s iconic Rambagh Palace, she explores the theme of ‘Spectrum of Life.’ When asked about her creative process and how she deals with creative blocks, she reveals her commitment to her craft. She does not wait for inspiration or motivation; instead, painting has become an integral part of her lifestyle. “I do not give myself the choice to not paint and I have made it a way of life”, she says.

Dr. Sushma Mahajan’s incredible journey from medicine to art serves as a testament to the limitless potential of human determination and the power of pursuing one’s passion. Her story reminds us that age is no barrier to mastering new skills, and with dedication and hard work, we can achieve greatness at any stage of life.
