Conserving heritage is always a topic of discussion on World Heritage Day. To commemorate the occasion, a plethora of events unfolds, ranging from exhibitions showcasing the unique cultural and natural heritage of diverse regions, to cultural events spotlighting the traditions and customs of local communities, and guided tours offering insights into the history and significance of heritage sites. However, the fervor surrounding these discussions often diminishes soon after the day concludes. To sustain this discourse and foster a connection between heritage and the youth, social media emerges as a powerful tool.

Meet Bharat Singh, the man behind ‘Jaipur Houses’, a popular Instagram page dedicated to appreciating the vanishing beauty of Jaipur’s old houses and structures. Through captivating imagery and insightful narratives, Singh ignites a renewed appreciation for Jaipur’s heritage among a diverse audience. The allure of Jaipur Houses lies in its ability to transform passive scrolling into an immersive journey through time. Each post serves as a window into the past, inviting viewers to rediscover the stories embedded within the city’s walls. More than just a collection of photographs, Jaipur Houses sparks dialogue and engagement. Followers share memories, anecdotes, and even personal connections to the featured landmarks — be it the houses, streets, the shops or even the motifs one finds on the houses in the Pink City — breathing new life into forgotten narratives.

A Passion for Preservation

From an early age, Singh displayed a penchant for writing, coupled with a voracious appetite for reading. His fascination with Jaipur led him to devour every book available on the city, nurturing a deep understanding of its rich heritage. Singh’s journey into documenting and preserving Jaipur’s architectural heritage digitally began with a simple passion: capturing the essence of old things. With a keen eye for detail and a fascination for the past, he found himself drawn to the weathered charm of ancient houses, each telling a story of bygone eras. Residing in an old house himself, Singh experienced firsthand the magic of living within walls steeped in history. It was when his sister welcomed a newborn, that the idea of creating an archive took root. Recognizing that future generations might not have the opportunity to experience their ancestral home, Singh embarked on a mission to preserve its memory for posterity.

“The idea was not to start an Instagram page,” Singh recalls, “but just to document our family house where three generations have lived, so that the memories can be kept alive.” Thus, Jaipur Houses was born in 2022, initially envisioned as a private archive the future generations of the family. However, what began as a personal project soon evolved into a public endeavour as the page garnered unexpected attention. Within a mere two years, Jaipur Houses has amassed a devoted following of over 30,000 odd people, drawn to its captivating portrayal of Jaipur’s heritage.

In 2022, when the page took its fledgling steps, only two similar initiatives—Delhi Houses and Calcutta Houses—existed. Venturing into the streets with his phone camera, Singh encountered both curiosity and resistance and he had to explain his motives to skeptical onlookers. “Sometimes people used to get angry and ask what I am doing. I used to get called out as being sneaky. Once, I even faced a rebuke from a guard at Mahilya Chikistalaya for photographing the premises, citing potential safety concerns.”, he recalls. Yet, as the page gained traction, attitudes shifted. Today, invitations to document old houses pour in, which is a testament to the growing recognition of Jaipur Houses as an apt repository of city’s heritage. Enthusiasts across the city also actively contribute by sharing their own discoveries. “Whenever someone stumbles upon an old house, they click pictures and send me or they tag me on their posts”, he adds

Beyond Instagram Aesthetics

Driven by his innate eye for design, Singh initially intended to focus on documenting houses outside the walled city. Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, Singh assumed that significant efforts must have been made for the documentation of the buildings there. But he soon realized that there is a treasure trove of old buildings and structures inside the walled city that is being brought down at a huge speed. “A lot of old houses and buildings have already been broken down,” he notes, underscoring the imperative to document them before they vanish into oblivion. He also manages another page titled ‘Jodhpur Houses,’ stemming from his frequent visits to the city and his familial connections with cousins residing there. Even though it is not as active as Jaipur Houses, he envisions collaborating with his cousins to curate content and maintain the page.

Down the line, the ace instagrammer envisions creating a coffee table book comprising multiple volumes, dedicated to showcasing the old houses, buildings, and other structures of the Pink City.”The journey of raising awareness has only just begun,” remarks Singh, who emphasizes the current perception of the page as primarily a ‘cool’ platform for featuring heritage. However, his aspirations extend far beyond mere admiration. Singh hopes for a future where individuals or organizations that have the financial withstanding, invest in and restore these historic buildings, ensuring that heritage preservation transcends mere aesthetics and becomes a tangible reality.

Just 30 kilometers from Jaipur, in Bassi lies a sanctuary that breathes life into tales of resilience and compassion. Among its residents are Ranu, a 14-year-old blind and abandoned camel, Rani, a former circus star now liberated from captivity, and Blackie, rescued from a slaughter-bound fate in Shahjahanpur. These camels find solace and care at the Camel Rescue Centre, an initiative by Help in Suffering (HIS) established in 2011.

As reports signal a concerning decline in Indian single-humped camel populations, HIS steps up as a frontline champion. Their Camel Welfare Project spans urban centers and remote regions, providing essential veterinary care, including locations like Jaisalmer and the Pushkar Camel Fair. With the United Nations designating 2024 as the International Year of Camelids, underscoring their significance in human livelihoods, HIS’s Camel Welfare Programme emerges as a vital player. Through direct interventions, community training, and rescue efforts, HIS ensures the health and welfare of these vital animals, treating over 5000 camels annually.

A Beacon of Hope
Sharing more about this initiative, Managing Trustee of Help in Suffering, Timmie Kumar says: “Recognizing the dire need for veterinary services in remote areas, HIS embarked on a mission to build a Camel Rescue Centre and in 2011, with the support of the ELSU Foundation from Switzerland, the HIS Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) emerged in the village of Bassi. This marked Jaipur’s first specialized camel treatment hub, equipped to provide comprehensive care. Here, camels find solace and healing, with a dedicated resident veterinary surgeon and support staff. The CRC team also operates a mobile clinic to provide veterinary care and advice to camel owners in a large number of villages around Bassi.”

Compassionate Care
The Camel Welfare Programme extends a lifeline to the most impoverished village communities, where access to veterinary services for working camels is virtually non-existent. In and around Jaipur, camels are indispensable for pulling carts, particularly among families struggling on the outskirts with scant access to local veterinary care. For these families, whose livelihoods hinge on the labor of their camels, the inability of a sick animal to work means a loss of daily wages.

Encountering a range of ailments including lameness, diarrhea, colic, impaction, urinary, and respiratory problems, the HIS team ensures timely and comprehensive veterinary care through well-publicized camps and mobile clinics. This approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also promotes the long-term well-being of camels. In addition to providing essential medical treatment, HIS undertakes measures to improve the safety and welfare of camels. This includes replacing traditional nose pegs with humane alternatives and equipping carts with reflectors to reduce road accidents. Furthermore, HIS offers community training, empowering owners with the knowledge and skills needed to care for their animals effectively, thereby ensuring their continued health and vitality.

Jaipur Reads: A community that is not your typical book club https://allaboutjaipur.com/jaipurreads/8032/ https://allaboutjaipur.com/jaipurreads/8032/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 08:01:06 +0000 https://allaboutjaipur.com/?p=8032 Beyond the bustling events of Jaipur, discover the silent revolution of Jaipur Reads. The rustle of pages and the shared silence create a unique sense of community under the sunlit canopy of Central Park.

The post Jaipur Reads: A community that is not your typical book club appeared first on All About Jaipur.

]]>
In the vibrant cultural landscape of Jaipur, where literature events and festivals abound, there is a distinctive community that deviates from the typical book club norm, offering an unconventional haven for book lovers – ‘Jaipur Reads.’

This literary initiative, born last year in July, has blossomed into a gathering that marries the tranquility of libraries with the warmth of home. Founded by by Nishkant and Karan Beniwal in Jaipur, the community started with a modest four participants but has since grown steadily, with an average attendance of 15-20 members every Sunday morning.

What sets Jaipur Reads apart is its departure from the expected book club dynamics. In a city teeming with cultural events like art, theater, and the famed Jaipur Literature Festival, this community embraces a serene reading experience. Unlike the traditional book club setting, where members discuss a predetermined book, Jaipur Reads fosters a sense of community without the need for active conversations during reading sessions.

The roots of this community can be traced back to Cubbon Reads in Bangalore, where Shruti Sah and Harsh Snehanshu began a silent reading ritual every Saturday in Cubbon Park in December 2022. Their initiative, posted on social media, sparked a movement that has now reached over 70 cities worldwide. In July 2023, Nishkant and Karan, inspired by Cubbon Reads, brought this reading revolution to Jaipur.

The membership of Jaipur Reads spans a diverse spectrum, currently ranging from 18 years to 45 years, encompassing voracious readers, writers, and newcomers alike. Inclusive and beginner-friendly, the community offers a platform for those who seek solace in the written word, like Karan, who, due to his shy nature, had been hesitant to join other book clubs in the past. “There are no forced conversations or awkward small talk during these sessions. Participants are free to come and go as they please, with no subscription charges. Held in a park, the sessions are accessible to everyone, providing a much-needed respite from hectic schedules amid nature and sunlight”, tells Karan.

Beyond the pages of books, Jaipur Reads has become a catalyst for forming connections. The community has birthed another group, ‘Jaipur Paints,’ and members often extend their camaraderie by going for coffee or tea after the reading session. Even as the co-founder, Nishkant, moved away from Jaipur for his educational pursuits, Karan continues to nurture and expand the community, ensuring its longevity. “The group members are also well versed with the activities that are currently being carried out by me such as keeping the instagram page active or making other members feel comfortable when they come. So even if I am not there for a few weeks or if I decide to move out of Jaipur, anyone else from the group can easily take up my role”, elaborates Karan.

For Anshi, who has been a part of Jaipur Reads since its inception, the experience can be encapsulated in one word – ‘joy.’ “The joy of reading under the open sky, the joy of companionship, and the joy of forming lasting connections. This community has not only rekindled my love for reading but has also brought beautiful connections into my life”, says Anshi.

As Jaipur Reads looks to the future, the vision is clear – to become the go-to community for anyone looking to embark on a reading journey. It is not just about the books; it is about finding joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging in the quiet communion of fellow book lovers under the Jaipur sky.

Transforming Pain into Purpose: Arushi Lohiya’s Inspiring Journey with Fibromyalgia https://allaboutjaipur.com/arushilohiya/7927/ https://allaboutjaipur.com/arushilohiya/7927/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2023 09:33:21 +0000 https://allaboutjaipur.com/?p=7927 #INSPIRATION

Arushi Lohiya was riding high on ambition and achievement. But destiny had a different script. Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at 22, her life transformed into an unceasing battle against chronic pain. Undeterred, she turned her pain into purpose, founding an NGO to foster dialogue and support for others facing similar challenges. Arushi's journey encapsulates resilience, advocacy, and the power of redefining one's identity in the face of adversity

Meet Arushi Lohiya. A trailblazer since her early days, Arushi’s journey was nothing short of extraordinary. From excelling in academics to being a national-level sports player, she danced effortlessly between her two passions – marketing and sports. Her dream job in sports marketing, working with renowned brands like ESPN, Coca Cola and Kingfisher and mingling with Bollywood and sports celebrities, was like living the life she had always dreamed of.

But life has a way of taking unexpected turns, and in 2012, Arushi’s world came crashing down. Diagnosed at a tender age of 22 with Fibromyalgia, a debilitating chronic pain condition, her existence took an unforeseen trajectory. Suddenly, pain became her constant companion, infiltrating every fiber of her being. The excruciating agony left her unable to sit or stand for more than a few minutes, forcing her to spend her days confined to her bed, bound by crepe bandages supporting her weak muscles.

For someone who had been a workaholic from her college days, the transition from a thriving career to a life bound by physical limitations was nothing short of heart-wrenching. The life of parties and social events gave way to the solitude of four walls, and the emotional turmoil was akin to grieving the loss of a loved one. Denial, anger, and eventual acceptance became the stepping stones on her path to rebuilding her identity from scratch.

While the world around her continued to function as before, Arushi had to craft her life afresh. “ I have somehow made peace with current situation through remotely working from home as a freelance marketing, branding and social media strategist for the past 8 years”, tells Arushi. Before the advent of COVID-19, flexible work-from-home arrangements were scarce in India. Arushi persevered, determined not to let her active mind stagnate despite the physical constraints. However, she encountered resistance and discrimination from people who struggled to understand the juxtaposition of her physical limitations and mental agility. “Due to excruciating pain, I cannot sit or stand for more than 15 minutes and I am forced to spend my days lying down prone confined to my bed. I do virtual meetings while lying down and have an intern help me type out e-mails”, she elaborates.

Undeterred, Arushi found solace and strength through her social media presence. She candidly shared her experiences, using her platform to spread awareness about living with Fibromyalgia. Through poignant poetry and meaningful posts, she connected with individuals worldwide, fostering conversations about this often-misunderstood condition. This passion for advocacy birthed the genesis of her NGO called ‘India Fibromyalgia Foundation’, providing a safe haven for people to openly discuss their journey with Fibromyalgia.

In a society where physical ailments are often treated as taboos, Arushi strives to change the narrative. Her vision is a world where Fibromyalgia patients do not just grapple with their internal battles but also find compassion and understanding in their families and communities. With a supportive and understanding family behind her, she knows the privilege of having a strong cheerleader by her side. ” I am aware that everyone is not as fortunate as me in terms of having an understanding and supportive family. The NGO also stands as an emotional support system for those who lack understanding from their loved ones”, says Arushi.

Each Fibromyalgia case is unique, with patients facing different sets of symptoms, making it a complex and challenging condition to tackle. While the journey towards a cure is in its nascent stage, Arushi dreams of a world where emotional battles are addressed with as much importance as physical ailments. Breaking down societal barriers and destigmatizing Fibromyalgia is at the heart of her mission.

Arushi Lohiya, a beacon of resilience and courage, continues to inspire countless lives through her journey from corporate corridors to the realm of advocacy. Her metamorphosis from a corporate star to an empathetic advocate has not only created a supportive community but also paved the way for open dialogue about living with Fibromyalgia. In her endeavor to make the world a more understanding place, she exemplifies the power of turning adversity into a catalyst for change.

Meet Chara Love, better known as ‘The Dog Lady of Bani Park’. Born in England, raised in Australia, and after spending years in Bali, she is now living in Jaipur since 2019. She is the true embodiment of ‘wanderlust’, which has led her to live a life full of adventures and diverse experiences.

The Dog Lady of Bani Park
Chara Love: The Dog Lady of Bani Park

Chara’s rebellious nature meant that she started making a living for herself from quite an early age. She found herself taking on secretarial jobs in various sectors, always seeking variety and change in her work life. Later, she completed a Social Work degree in Australia and worked towards providing counseling and psychotherapy to couples and individuals in government organizations and private practice. When it comes to her hobbies, Chara had interests as diverse as spinning, theatre and fitness.

However, it was her love for animals that truly became the defining aspect of her life. When she moved to Jaipur, she was unable to keep pets in her rented apartment. This led her to redirect her affection towards the street animals of the city. During the lockdown, she would feed as many as 70 dogs and puppies twice a day, and continues to feed around 40 of them even now. “During the lockdown, we regularly received food for animals from Raksha, a local NGO and that proved to be a great driver for the initiative”, tells Chara.

Chara Love with street dog

Chara’s affinity for animals can be traced back to her childhood, where she was surrounded by them. She spent a lot of time with her dogs, who were her constant companions. As she grew older, her interest turned towards rescuing dogs that were abandoned by their owners. Despite growing up on a farm where she consumed meat and milk, she later turned towards vegetarianism and veganism.

In 2019, Chara attended the Jaipur Literature Festival, where she met her current partner. Though he had never been a dog lover before, she was able to turn him into one. Together, they have been feeding dogs and puppes in the areas of Bani Park and Nehru Nagar. They also work towards rescuing those in abysmal conditions.

Feeding the dogs has not been without its challenges, however. “Some residents are averse to the idea of dogs being fed outside their homes or buildings, while others are afraid of the animals or simply dislike them”, tells Chara. She and her partner also face difficulty in procuring enough supplies, as the amount of donations in terms of money as well as food they receive has decreased since the lockdown. Additionally, she has to leave the country every three months to renew her visa, which means she has to find someone to feed the dogs when she’s away and sometimes that too involves paying someone to do the job.

When asked about how to solve these problems, Chara says: “The key lies in changing people’s perception of dogs as community animals.” By raising awareness about co-existence and the importance of treating street dogs with compassion, she hopes to create a better environment for these creatures that she holds so dear. “Since people have been noticing the work we do for the animals, many individuals have now started coming forward to donate generously”, tells Chara while highlighting the positive change that her work is bringing about.

Chara Love’s love for animals has touched the hearts of many. She is a true inspiration for anyone looking to make a positive change in their community, and her dedication to the cause is something that we should all strive to emulate.

DIVYAKRITI SINGH: GALLOPING TO THE TOP https://allaboutjaipur.com/dressage/7645/ https://allaboutjaipur.com/dressage/7645/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2023 17:42:10 +0000 https://allaboutjaipur.com/?p=7645 Read an exclusive conversation with Jaipur’s Divyakriti Singh, who ranks 1st in Asia and 14th in the world in the Dressage discipline of equestrian games. Furthermore, she is the only woman from Rajasthan to make it to the list of probables for the 19th Asian Games, slated to be held from 23 September to 8 October 2023, in the Dressage discipline.

The post DIVYAKRITI SINGH: GALLOPING TO THE TOP appeared first on All About Jaipur.

]]>
Dressage is a sport that has been refined over centuries and has evolved into a true art form. It involves the intricate coordination between horse and rider to perform a series of precise movements that demonstrate the highest level of training and discipline. As an equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation, dressage is described as “the highest expression of horse training” where “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.”

As per the newly issued world rankings of Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), Jaipur’s Divyakriti Singh ranks 1st in Asia and 14th in the world in the Dressage discipline of equestrian games. Furthermore, she also made it to the list of probable for the 19th Asian Games, slated to be held from 23 September to 8 October 2023, in the Dressage discipline. What’s noteworthy is that she is the only woman athlete from Rajasthan to make it to the list of probables in the equestrian discipline for the 19th Asian Games. We caught up with her to know more about her journey. Below are some excerpts from the conversation:

Tell us about your journey in the equestrian sport and how you became interested in dressage?

My passion for equestrian sports began during my time at Mayo College Girls’ School in Ajmer. In seventh grade, all students were required to participate in a sport and I chose riding. As I spent more time around horses, my appreciation for their beauty, grace, and intelligence only deepened. I continued to ride and compete throughout my school years, participating in numerous Junior and Senior national championships and steadily advancing through the levels. Looking back on those formative years, I cherish the memories of my time spent in the saddle, and am grateful for the foundation in equestrianism that Mayo College Girls’ School provided me.

How do you feel about being a trailblazer and inspiring others in your community?

I am thrilled to be the only woman from Rajasthan to have made it onto the probables list for the 19th Asian Games Indian team for equestrian sports. However, my ultimate goal is to use this platform to inspire other women to pursue equestrian sports professionally. In 2014, an all-women team represented India for the first time, but there has been a gap since then. With the abundance of talent and potential in our country, especially in Rajasthan, I firmly believe that with the right training and support, we can see many more girls and boys excel at the international level in the coming years. It is my dream to create a pathway for young equestrians to follow and to pave the way for greater representation of women in this exhilarating and rewarding sport.

What challenges have you faced as a female athlete in this sport and how have you overcome them?

Equestrianism is a rare sport where men and women compete on a level playing field, making it truly empowering for female athletes. From local competitions to the Olympics, women have consistently demonstrated their excellence in the sport, often surpassing their male counterparts. While every athlete faces their own set of challenges, I do not view my gender as a hindrance in my equestrian journey. Though I have faced my fair share of setbacks and difficulties, I am determined to continue pushing myself and achieving my goals.

How do you prepare for competitions, both mentally and physically?

The preparation for equestrian competitions is a highly detailed and individualistic process. As an athlete in this sport, my teammate is a horse, and the key to a successful competition lies in the seamless partnership between the horse and rider. Achieving this level of harmony takes countless hours of practice, both in the saddle and outside of it. Every horse has a unique personality and requires a different approach to training, so it’s essential to have a deep understanding of your horse’s individual needs and preferences.

Personally, I have developed a close relationship with my horses over time. I have spent countless hours caring for them and getting to know them on a personal level. This bond is built on trust, and it’s what enables us to work together as a team in competitions.

Leading up to a competition, we follow a rigorous training schedule for two weeks to ensure that we are well-prepared, without over-exerting ourselves too soon. This involves a variety of structured exercises, with support from a team of experts including trainers, farriers, physiotherapists, and veterinarians. Mental preparation is also critical in this sport, and as riders, we must maintain a calm and confident mindset to guide our horses through any situation.

Despite our best efforts, failures are inevitable in this sport. I have experienced my share of setbacks and disappointments along the way. However, I believe that resilience and mental toughness are essential qualities for any athlete. Through mental training and practices like Sudarshan Kriya and meditation, I have learned to cultivate a never-give-up attitude that has helped me persevere through tough times and emerge stronger on the other side.

Can you walk us through your training regimen and how you stay in top shape for your competitions?

In the equestrian sport, every day is a new challenge, but having a dedicated team of experienced trainers and coaches makes all the difference. My team works together to create a tailored training regimen that meets both mine and my horses’ needs, ensuring that we are able to perform at our best.

Starting early in the morning, my day is filled with a range of tasks from horse riding to horse care. Apart from riding lessons, I’m responsible for mucking out the stables, preparing feed, sweeping the barn, and taking the horses for their daily turn-out. On average, I train for 4-5 days a week, depending on the upcoming schedule. As a competition approaches, the intensity of training gradually increases to ensure that both my horse and I are fully prepared.

No matter the weather, I am dedicated to providing the best possible care for my horses. In temperatures as low as -7°C, through rain, snow, and storms, and even in the heat of summer, I make sure my horses are well taken care of. On competition days, I travel with my horses in the horse truck to ensure they receive the best care possible, and I am usually at the competition venue from morning until night.

To keep the horses mentally happy and the training varied, we spend two days a week hacking out in the forest or cantering on the track. I also plan my training in such a way that I ride every day of the week. Even after a long day, I always make sure to check on my horses in the stables before I go to bed.

How do you balance your training and competing schedule with other aspects of your life?

At present, I believe that both I and those around me have been solely focused on the Asian Games. As a result, I have been fully devoted to it and have yet to figure out how to balance it with other areas of my life.

However, like all aspects of life, particularly in sports, sacrifices must be made. In my journey, I too have had to make certain compromises along the way. I am not able to engage in activities that most people my age participate in, and I have had to be away from my home and family, even during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, riding and competing at this level have always been my aspirations, and the little sacrifices I have had to make seem insignificant in comparison to the opportunity to pursue my dreams. I feel grateful and fortunate to have the chance to do what I love.

Moving forward, I understand the importance of balancing my passion for riding with other aspects of my life for long-term sustainability. Riding is a sport that one can participate in for a lifetime, and I am determined to ride and compete for as long as possible.

What advice would you give to aspiring equestrian athletes, especially those from non-traditional equestrian communities?

Although I do not believe that I am qualified to give advice to others, I have gained significant insight from my own experiences. There are two significant takeaways that I would like to share. Firstly, investing in a skilled trainer is critical to improve and refine one’s riding abilities. The right trainer can offer valuable guidance and support, which can help achieve new levels of success.

Secondly, it is essential to have faith in oneself and prioritize the well-being of one’s horses. Horses have a remarkable ability to go above and beyond for their riders, and as riders, we must prioritize their welfare as our topmost responsibility.

The C-scheme located Krishna Niwas radiated an aura of intellectual stimulation and thought-provoking discussion as the Alliance Francaise Jaipur in association with the French Institute in India, recently hosted the ‘Night of Ideas’, an evening of literary conversations, debate and dialogue with Nobel Laureate for literature, French author, Annie Ernaux. She was joined by the winner of Prix Femina and member of Academie Goncourt, Camille Laurens, Afro feminist author, Laura Nsafou and winner of the prestigious Emile Guimet prize for South Asian Literature, Shubhangi Swarup.

In a riveting session moderated by the writer and translator, Saudamini Deo, the panelists discussed the limits of the private in the public, the nuances of fiction, auto-fiction and autobiographical writing as well as examined the interplay between identity and publishing. With insightful commentary and thoughtful perspectives, the panelists provided an interesting discussion on the influence of personal experience on the craft of writing and the reciprocal impact of publishing on individual identity.

The Panel for the Night of Ideas

Auto Social Biography

Annie Ernaux was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”. It is noteworthy that she is not only one of the 17 women to win the Nobel Prize but also the first French woman to be awarded this honour. Her literary work, mostly autobiographical, maintains close links with sociology. In a question on the ‘auto-fiction’ genre of writing, Ernaux said that when she began writing, auto-fiction did not exist. There was mainly novel and autobiographical form of writing. She wrote about her own experiences such as relationship with parents, abortion, struggle of the working class and the importance of women’s freedom of speech, among others. “It is difficult to put limits to the private when one is writing about their experiences and I prefer to call my work ‘Auto Social Biography’”, said Ernaux.

Contributing to the discussion, Afro-feminist author Laura Nsafou emphasized that auto-fiction is often stigmatized due to the fear of individuals in the writer’s social circle appearing in the book. She acknowledged that while the lines between private and public can be hazy, it is essential for writers to uphold ethical standards in their work. Nsafou’s thoughtful perspective added a valuable dimension to the conversation, emphasizing the importance of responsibility and respect in the art of storytelling.

A view of the audience

Politics and Writing

Reflecting on the complexities of navigating the ‘political’ in writing and shedding light on the interconnectedness of writing and broader societal structures, Ernaux posited that all writing is inherently political. Even when the focus is on personal experiences, political concepts such as family dynamics are at play since they are shaped by legal frameworks. Therefore, socio-political factors inevitably influence one’s writing.

Echoing Ernaux’s perspective, Nsafou emphasized that even tackling taboo subjects through writing has political implications since such taboos are socially constructed. By addressing these sensitive topics, writers challenge prevailing societal norms and assert their agency, making their work inherently political.

As the discussion drew to a close, the panelists offered diverse perspectives on the meaning and multifaceted nature of fiction. While Ernaux defined it simply as the way a book or piece of writing is written , the other writers contributed their own intriguing insights. Laurens proposed a thought-provoking notion, stating, “We are all fiction. As we remember ourselves, we invent ourselves.” Swarup offered another interesting viewpoint, suggesting that the opposite of fiction is a lack of imagination.
