November 19 is celebrated as International Men’s Day globally. If you are at your wits’ end on how to make the men in your life feel special – whether it is your dad, brother, husband or boyfriend or friend – here are some easy last minute ideas for you from around the Pink City:

ELEVATE THEIR STYLE

Designer buttons by Satya Johri

Gone are the days when jewellery was just women’s domain. Elevate your man’s turnout by adding some glam jewellery pieces and accessories to their wardrobe. Bespoke and elegant accessories like cufflinks, lapel pins, designer buttons are some great gifting options. Satya Johri is a homegrown brand that is well known for their exclusive range of hand painted, enamel and encrusted cufflinks, buttons and broaches. One can also get accessories made based on the personal crests and logos as well as get their personal jewellery remodeled from them.

A GROOMING SESSION

A grooming session at Tangerine salon

As men are now increasingly becoming more conscious of their looks, men’s grooming has become a necessity. We asked hair and beauty expert, Natasha Singh, the founder of Tangerine salon about what services should men get and here’s what she had to say: “Salons are no longer female-only zones and there are a number of treatments available specifically for men. A basic manicure and pedicure is a must for men considering they wear closed shoes which leads to odour as well as dead skin. Face clean ups are a must every 45 days and hair spas should also be done at regular intervals since they give the much-needed protein to the hair.”

HYDRAFACIALS & PEEL TREATMENTS

Dr. Nitika Soni Godha during a carbon laser peel process

Many medical spas and dermatology clinics now also offer medical facials and peel treatments for long lasting results. Dental Surgeon and Facial aesthetician, Dr. Nitika Soni Godha suggests hydrafacial and carbon laser peel for men.  “Hydrafacial helps in dislodging the oils, dirt, and debris from deep within the skin pores, giving you a smoother and vibrant complexion. Carbon laser peel in men is very effective for combating oily skin and large pores. Chemical and brightening peels such as those derived from Vitamin A help in reducing pigmentation and sun damage”, tells Dr. Nitika. So book your men a hair or skin service and help them look and feel their best!

RAISE THE BAR

Kokteil simplifying cocktails

If everything else seems a bit too overwhelming, then why not just gift them a bottle of their favourite spirit. You can never really go wrong with that, can you? And if you’re in the mood to raise the bar by getting behind the bar and whipping up their favourite cocktail for them but have no idea how to, then let Kokteil simplify it for you. Be it the good old whiskey sour or a warm rum based cocktail tailor-made for the nip in the air, all you have to do it is get the freshly prepared mixture from the one-of-its-kind takeaway bar in Jaipur – Kokteil,  mix it with your choice of spirit and let the men sit, sip and savour!

They say life is what happens to us while we are busy making other plans. This stands cent percent true for Jaipur’s Jai Vardhan Singh. A graduate in English, who wanted to become a lawyer but eventually went on to set up an export house and a backpackers’ hostel, and thanks to the pandemic, is now handcrafting soaps and cosmetics.

Jai Vardhan Singh J Natural
Jai Vardhan Singh

Skilled by Chance

When Jai Vardhan went to Harvard in 2014 for a conference at the Harvard Project of International and Asian relations to speak on Security and Diplomacy in South East Asia, little did he know it would eventually inspire him to venture into making natural soaps and cosmetics. “The family that I stayed with on my trip to Harvard had a lady who quit her job at Ernst & Young and got into making natural soaps and cosmetics and she was doing quite well for herself. During the three weeks that I was there, I used to work with her and tried to learn as much as I could. However, I did not put that into use anytime soon”, shares Jai Vardhan.

Entrepreneur at heart

While at Harvard, Jai Vardhan ran out of his money and went to the Times Square in New York and sold paintings that he had taken from Jaipur as gifts. “Selling those paintings at Times Square made me enough money to fund my trip and that gave me the idea of a starting an export house.” In 2017, he, along with his father, started a backpackers’ hostel in C Scheme called ‘The Big Mooch’ (For those of you who have met him, this name would not come as a surprise!). Catering to travellers from across the globe, he and his father managed all the chores on their own. From check-ins and housekeeping to finding missing guests at odd hours, it all came as a great learning experience for them. Come 2020 and just like all other travel and hospitality businesses landed in the soup, their hostel had to be shut down as well.

The entrepreneur bug in him coupled with the extreme problem of dry and itchy skin that his sister and mother were facing finally led him to use the knowledge he had acquired back during his stint at Harvard. “At the end of the first pandemic-induced lockdown, I set out on this soap-making journey using the skills I had learned back in 2014 and finessing it with the practices of Ayurveda. Seeing the results on my mother and sister, who were the obvious guinea pigs, I launched my first batch of products for sale. I had never thought that this would be a full time venture as I was looking forward to re-open the hostel after the lockdown but looking at the response and queries coming for the soaps, I decided to launch my brand – ‘J Natural’ with 11 products in 2020”, shares Jai Vardhan.

Relationship building is at the helm

From manufacturing products as varied as soaps and foot soaks to body butters and ubtans, he also started incorporating the therapeutic mantras of his great grandmother. What’s interesting is that in the age of websites, apps, and micro targeting through the internet, Jai Vardhan lays more emphasis on making customers through one-on-one interactions and relationship building. “While a website is great for the visibility of my business but solely relying on it eliminates my personalized style of building a client and marketing as well as selling the products. Ask him what his ultimate  business motto is and he says: “Try to keep everything as simple and natural as possible!”

“Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees”
– BKS Iyengar

June 21 is celebrated as The International Day of Yoga since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. This year, All About Jaipur spoke to some yoga practitioners and enthusiasts from the Pink City to understand what yoga means to them, how it has helped them through the various adversities of life and how it has transformed them as a person.

“YOGA HELPS ME CONNECT TO MY INNER SELF

Shefali Upadhyaya

In 2016, Shefali (30) was going through a rough phase in her life and her quest to find peace and calm motivated her to take up Yoga. However, she eventually went on to do a Teacher Training Course and became a yoga teacher. She also runs a popular instagram page ‘The Yogini Journal’ where she digitally documents her journey.  “I picked up yoga to work on my mental health but it has also benefitted my physical wellbeing. Moreover, it has changed my thought process, eating habits, sleeping habits, how I am with people and a lot more. I am more conscious about my choices now.”, says Shefali while talking about her journey of Yoga.

Giving a word of advice to those who want to take up yoga, Shefali says: “Be consistent, listen to your body and do not make the mistake of comparing your day 1 to someone else’s day 30”

“YOGA IS A UNION OF MIND, BODY AND SOUL”

Mita Kakkar

Mita Kakkar (53) was suffering from hypothyroidism but thanks to yoga, she has been able to conquer it without any medication. “I practised pranayams every day and that has helped me bring my thyroid levels in the normal range. In fact, my family also has a history of diabetes but I have also been able to maintain my insulin level with regular practice of certain asanas”, tells Mita, who primarily takes Yoga classes for foreign tourists and students.

Busting a common myth about Yoga, Mita adds that people think in order to do yoga one needs to have a flexible body. However, what one only needs is strong willpower. “I have done countless yoga classes, practices and workshops where I was unable to perform a certain pose. These situations of (self-proclaimed) “failure” have taught me some of the most valuable lessons I could not have learned otherwise — Accept that there will always be someone that “does it better” and remember that yoga practice is not a static thing, it will change. Sometimes it will go up and sometimes it will go down. It is important to flow with these changes.”, shares the yoga practitioner.

“YOGA FOR ME IS A WAY OF LIFE

Shweta Saharan Singh

Shweta Saharan Singh (42) has been an endurance cyclist, spanning a whopping 600kms at a stretch within 39 hours. However, she still felt that something was lacking and needed to be learned for a higher level of endurance. This led her to take up Ashtanga Yoga.

“There are various styles of yoga practices but to achieve the best physically you must dedicate yourself a 100% mentally. Yoga when practiced on a regular basis can, knowingly or unknowingly, make you overcome a variety of challenges we all face in our day to day lives. Many times, I have found answers to a lot of questions during my practice”, says Shweta while talking about her tryst with yoga.

Sharing an insight for those wanting to take up yoga professionally, Shweta adds: “Practice, Practice and Practice, Yoga is 99% physical practice and 1% theory. It can be easy to take up a course and become a certified yoga teacher in a short span of time. However, I think practically only your self-practice can develop you into a better teacher. This is because the deeper we get into our practices the more we realize the depths of yoga physically and mentally.”

“YOGA TAUGHT ME HOW TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT”

Tithi Singh

Though Tithi Singh (31) has been practising Yoga since childhood, her journey as a professional yogi began when she was preparing for her UPSC exams. “I could not clear the UPSC exam and I was mentally devastated. This is when I started practicing yoga and slowly I realised how my body and mind changed towards certain things. I started to feel calmer and that’s when I took my first step towards being a professional Yogi”, recounts Tithi.

For someone who wants to include yoga in their daily routine, she suggests: “Surround yourself with people who have a healthy lifestyle and are into fitness. Understand which form of yoga you like more. If you are someone who is fond of rigorous practice, then  go for ashtanga yoga or power yoga . However, if into a relaxing form of yoga, then choose hatha yoga or yin yoga”.

“I AM ADDICTED TO YOGA”

Sarika Kedawat

After Sarika Kedawat’s children went out for academic and livelihood pursuits, there was a void in her life. Her children pushed her to take a step towards her taking care of herself and get into a fitness regimen. That’s when she got into Yoga. At the age of 48, not only can she easily do 108 surya namaskars at one go but has also participated in district, state and national level competitions where she won several awards and accolades.

“Yoga has become an addiction for me. I can’t miss it even for a day. It is my reason to live and it motivates me to wake up every day”, says the yoga enthusiast who not only found emotional solace in yoga but it also tackled problems like slipped disc and menopause with it.

Even though fermentation has been around for centuries as a way to preserve food, in recent years fermented foods and beverages have witnessed a huge surge in their popularity owing to the various health benefits they offer.  Fermented foods are essentially foods or beverages produced through controlled microbial growth and the conversion of food components through enzymatic action. In our everyday lives, we have been consuming a host of fermented foods including curd, pickle, dosa, idli and kanji, among others. However, of late there are a host of other products that are gaining immense popularity like kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, sourdough, and kvass. Let’s take a look at some of them and know from the food industry stalwarts what makes these foods much-sought-after.

Jaipur-based nutritional psychologist and food stylist, Dr. Divolka Gyanjee while breaking down the health benefits of fermentation says: “Simply put, fermentation is providing the right controlled environment to the good bacteria so that they increase their population. When consumed, they join the trillions of bacteria that inherently reside in the gastrointestinal system and help create a better-balanced microflora. These bacteria help in the production of feel-good and happy hormones and also aids in building immunity. Furthermore, fermented food activates the immune cells in our gut and starts a movement in them. In some studies, it has also been noted that fermented food helps in speedy recovery when you are sick. Not only fermented foods increase the nutritional value of our food, they are also rich in Vitamin C, Iron, and Zinc — all of which are proven to contribute to a stronger immune system.”

A fermented drink that has been making waves in the recent past is, undoubtedly, the Kombucha. It is a lightly effervescent, sweetened black or green tea which is known to be packed with probiotics, vitamins and antioxidants. Available in a wide array of flavours, it is a healthier alternative to canned drinks and other high-on-sugar mixers used to make cocktails and mocktails.

Talking about her love for Kombucha, Pink City’s popular food blogger, Radhika Agarwal says:  “I had read about Kombucha on the internet a lot of times and tried it for the first time at a Farmer’s Market few years back in Jaipur. I love chilled drinks which are fizzy and so I instantly fell in love with it. It’s definitely a healthier choice over a cold drink and packaged drinks as it is loaded with prebiotics, probiotics as well as antioxidants. I love trying different flavours of Kombucha, especially during summers and it’s a great option to use as a mixer with your alcoholic drinks as well.”

Throwing light on the age-old tradition of fermentation, Radhika adds: “Fermented food items are not a millennial or Gen-Z thing, as people usually presume. It dates back to hundreds and thousands of years. Pickles and sirke wale pyaz (Vinegar Onions) have been commonplace in all Indian households since times immemorial. After having incorporated fermented items in my regular diet, I have noticed that my gut health has improved a lot.”

In Jaipur, Radhika suggests getting your stock of Kombucha from CommBucha by MAVI, Pure Vibes and Café Quaint. A few commercial brands of Kombucha are also available at Shoppers Paradise, Tiny Roots and Jaipur Modern Kitchen in C-Scheme. The Jawahar Kala Kendra situated Café Quaint was in fact the first cafe in Jaipur to introduce Kombucha back in 2017.

“We’ve had Kombucha on the menu from the very beginning but back then since we were just testing the waters here we introduced only two kinds of it — a regular plain Kombucha and a rose-flavoured one. Gradually people developed the taste and liking for it and now the demand has increased multifold. This led us to experiment with the process and flavour combinations and we now brew over 20 liters of Kombucha every week”, tells Ayesha Sajjan, Co-Owner and Head Chef of Café Quaint.

Another popular fermented product at Café Quaint is the Sourdough bread, which witnessed a huge surge in its popularity in the lockdown last year. Made simply with flour, water and a sourdough culture, it is considered a much healthier alternative to regular white or brown bread.  “The biggest challenge for us has been temperature. It plays a very important role in natural fermentation and the heat in Jaipur sometimes complicates things. Kombuchas are brewed for upto a week, and our breads are handcrafted and proofed upto 36 hours before baking. The processes are long and tedious but the nutrition profile and all the love we get from Jaipur makes it all worth it!”, adds Ayesha.

Now that things are limping back to normal after the second wave of covid-19 in the country and most of us are pepped to be stepping out after a long hiatus, it is imperative to protect our hair from the scorching heat. Since there are many new salon businesses in the town, you can check Salon Lofts if considering beauty business partnership with them. It will also be a good idea to visit them and pamper your mane with that much-needed styling and grooming before finalizing the deal. All About Jaipur spoke to a few hair experts from the city to get some insights related to trending hairstyles, haircuts and hair care tips for the season.

Protect your hair

Creative Head of Geetanjali Salon, Ammy Malengzza suggests choosing proper hair conditioners that contain sunscreen to shield your hair from harmful UV rays. “As the sun dries out your mane, ensure you hydrate your hair and apply leave-in products. Go for the one that suits your hair and don’t forget to use a hair mask every time you wash your hair.  Make sure the conditioner and mask are also loaded with moisture and go easy on heating rods and irons”, he advises. If you have long dreadlocks, you should invest in the right products for locs.

For those who are experiencing hair loss, you may consider getting hair tattoo services.

Hair expert Ammy Malengzza

To get rid of the build-up and sweat in your hair, Natasha Singh Chauhan — a professional hairstylist and founder of Tangerine Boutique Salon, suggests using a detox shampoo at least once a week or for every alternate wash. “Deep conditioning and masks are important. Oiling is a great option too but should only be done half an hour prior to washing your hair. Overnight oiling can lead to clogged pores and should be avoided”, she says while sharing a word of caution.

Tie it Up

Owing to the heat, women mostly prefer to tie their hair during summers. One can, however, try different hairstyles like sleek high ponytails, top knots, messy buns, side braids, braided buns, french braids, fish braids, among others. “A half-crown braid keeps the sweat away from the scalp”, suggests Ammy.

Braids look elegant and keep the summer sweat at bay

Giving a great tip to make these hairstyles fun and unique, Natasha suggests using different hair accessories like colorful scrunchies and hair bands.

“Headscarves and designer clips are other accessories one can experiment with”, points out Celebrity Make-Up Artist & Founder of Style N Scissors, Ritu Deswal.

Short is Cool

“There is no denying that women are now more experimental with their hair lengths and are comfortable sporting short hairdos”, says Natasha. She suggests bob, shag and shoulder-length haircuts for the season.

Adding to this hair expert, Ritu Deswal says short tapered cut, textured layers, invisible layers and long bangs are also quite in. For those looking to experiment with their hair colour, she recommends toffee tones, soft balayage, root highlights, Alice bands, copper as well as silver hues.

“Short hairstyles not only look chic and cool but are also easier to maintain than long hair. Short hairstyles are ideal for women from all age groups, especially for those who have fine to the medium thickness of hair. A short hairstyle can enhance many face shapes and also frame your face perfectly”, tells Ammy.

Here’s a quick salon checklist to protect against Covid-19

– Make a prior appointment and visit at the given time to avoid crowding at salons.
– Wear a mask at all times and use sanitizer and surface disinfectant spray frequently.
– Call and enquire about the safety precautions being taken in your salon such as disposable sheets, regular sanitization, temperature checks of staff and clients etc.
– If required, carry your own towel.
– After returning from the salon make sure to take a bath and wear a clean pair of clothes.

The second wave of Covid-19 has been brutal on us all. With the rising number of cases and increasing worry among the citizens, Consultant Pulmonologist, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Jaipur, Dr. Shivani Swami gives us a better understanding of the second strain, use of certain medicines and drugs for treatment, the significance of vaccine and post-Covid recovery.

Among other things, she says: “We just wake up, dress up and show up. When a sick patient gets well and goes home and the family is very thankful, that is where we draw our inspiration.”

In the past, Dr. Swami has worked in some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country like the Medanta: The MediCity in Gurgaon and the Fortis Hospital in New Delhi. She specialises in pulmonology, sleep medicine, allergy and immunology as well as critical care.

Dr. Shivani Swami
Dr. Shivani Swami

Q. How is the second strain of Covid-19 different from the others?

A – It is way more contagious than the first one. Many young people are getting very sick. Most importantly, there is a lot of severe lung involvement. Patients are requiring oxygen sometimes as early as the 5th or 6th day which was not the case in the first wave.

Q. Medicines like Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine are not being recommended by the doctors. So what is the new change in the treatment for Covid-19?

A- Drugs like Azithromycin and Hydroxychloroquine are almost on their way out. As per evidence and studies, the new guidelines do not support their effectiveness. However, many continue to use it because of results from their personal experiences. Similarly, as per the new guidelines, plasma has no role but still a lot of doctors are using it in the early stages. Most of the guidelines are based on studies done overseas not looking at the Indian strain or the Indian patient. So every doctor here is deciding as per their own experience.

Q. What do you recommend for a patient who has just got afflicted?

A – Someone who has just gotten afflicted should contact their doctor and if advised get tested. Secondly, during the course of illness a lot of doctors will advise you repeated blood tests to decide the further course of treatment. These are genuinely advised and not to make money out of the patient. Thirdly, many patients rush to get CT scan done by themselves in the early stages which is not recommended. You are unnecessarily exposing your body to radiation. The diagnostic test still remains the RT-PCR test.

Q. What precautions should the patient follow in the second week? When should the steroids be recommended?

A – In the second week you need to keep a close watch on fever and oxygen levels. You need to eat well and lie prone (on your stomach) multiple times a day lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour each time. This will help with breathing. If you experience any kind of chest pain or your oxygen level drops below 92 you must consult your doctor.

Each doctor makes a call for their patient when it comes to steroids depending on the blood tests and their clinical condition. But for steroids to be given in the initial 4-5 days is counterproductive. It should not be taken without medical supervision.

Q. Are vaccines and the Covid protocols the answer to current Covid wave?

A – Vaccines are the only answer to the Covid wave. Those who have gotten both shots their disease severity is much milder and they recover easily. It may not be 100% effective which it is not even claiming to be. But, it certainly has an effect in preventing moderate to severe disease.

Q. Do you agree that doctors in private hospitals are not getting enough publicity even though they are doing a herculean job?

A – I do not think anyone is looking for publicity right now. Nevertheless, the Government could be more supportive of private hospitals. Sometimes we have a problem in obtaining medicines for the patients.

Q. Would you like to comment on the overwhelmed medical infrastructure in the country presently?

A – No country can provide healthcare for all their citizens at one go, as is the present situation. However, we could have been better prepared considering we have gone through this for almost a year and everybody expected this wave to come back in March.

Q. What are the post-recovery Covid protocols?

A- Post-recovery a person should really focus on their diet and lifestyle. If they have diabetes they should control their sugar. They should do a lot of deep breathing exercises or respiratory physiotherapy as advised by their doctor. This is the time they need to work on themselves to get better and not just lie in bed.

Q. How have you coped with the stress and work pressure of the second wave?

A – We just wake up, dress up and show up. When a sick patient gets well and goes home and the family is very thankful, that is where we draw our inspiration.

One of the many changes that Covid-19 brought about is certainly the way people work out.  They are now struggling to burn 100 sit up calories. The lockdown forced people not only to ‘Work From Home’ but to also ‘Workout From Home’. Just a few days into the pandemic, people realized that traditional gym equipment like treadmills, dumbbell sets and ellipticals are not mandatory for staying fit and active. Functional Fitness, Yoga, Tabata, Pilates and other forms of exercise which use one’s own body weight rather than traditional external equipment gained currency. However, one did miss the energy, motivation and vibe of a collective fitness regimen with a coach and a peer group.

Ever since the lockdown restrictions from gyms and other fitness studios were lifted, there has been a slow but sure surge in the number of people enrolling themselves for various fitness regimens.  When all people cam to know about What Is A Push-pull Workout And Why Is It Effective?, immediately it’s effectiveness spread like a wild fire. What’s interesting is that more and more people are opting for diverse kinds of holistic workouts that are aimed at uplifting the physical as well as mental well-being of people rather than just burning calories on a treadmill. But with a quiet treadmill, exercising has become quite at ease and affordable to everyone. In the past 3-4 years,  many new kinds of fitness studios in Jaipur are springing up that cater to the specific fitness goals of people – like balance, flexibility, agility and toning of the body and not just weight loss. Let’s take a look at some of them:

THE BOXING NIGHTINGALE

A fitness studio in C-Scheme, the Boxing Nightingale offers ‘Body Combat’ which is a mixed martial arts inspired high-intensity cardio workout. This regimen challenges one to push their limits while shaping and toning the entire body. It is an ultimate warrior workout to develop coordination and release stress. One burns calories while learning how to punch, kick, block and strike.  “The boxing Nightingale” is my endeavour to represent strong women and empower them to feel like they can achieve anything with the right attitude and mindset. Body Combat gives me a sense of empowerment and makes me feel really fit, fierce and powerful!” says Neeru Soni, the founder of the studio.

FITNESS TRAIL

Founded by a young and passionate fitness coach, Shivangi Sarda, ‘Fitness Trail’ focuses on bodyweight training and free weights like dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells rather than fixed machines. The sessions vary from Strength and Conditioning sessions, Military Fit workouts, HIIT as well as Mobility sessions. The aim is to promote lifestyle changes which include not only exercising an hour daily but making small sustainable changes like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking 10,000 steps a day and making healthy eating choices. “The changes that the clients see not just in weight but also in terms of body strength, shape, energy levels, sleep cycle, menstruation cycles and overall well-being is something that motivates them to stay regular with their workouts and to follow an active and healthy lifestyle. Our online sessions, which especially became popular in the pandemic, have helped many people to start their fitness journey as it saves travel time”, shares Shivangi Sarda.

COACH AJ FITNESS

Run by Celebrity Coach, Ajay Singh who is also the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Indian Polo Team, this fitness studio focuses on small group and personal training. Each day of the week is dedicated to a different fitness routine. These include HIIT (high-intensity interval training), Tabata (each round lasts 4 minutes and involves eight intervals of 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest), Functional Fitness (focused on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions) and Crossfit (a strength and conditioning workout that is made up of functional movement performed at a high-intensity level), among others. They also organize boot camps in outdoor and open spaces like parks and gardens to break the monotony of working out in the same place.

BALANCE STUDIO JAIPUR

A one of its kind yoga studio in Jaipur, Balance Studio by Tithi Singh and Rohan Raheja also caters to small groups of people in order to give personalized attention. The Bohemian ambiance and peaceful vibe of this studio surely makes one want to spend a little quiet time there with oneself after the workout. Aerial Yoga (traditional yoga poses performed while being on a hammock that is suspended from the ceiling to support one’s body weight) and Acro Yoga (a physical practice that combines yoga and acrobatics) sessions are also held here.

THE PILATES STUDIO

The Pilates Studio by celebrity coach Namrata Purohit is the first-of-its-kind in the city. Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. It also works on achieving a more relaxed state of mind. Pilates exercises are based on either a mat, which is a tad thicker than a standard yoga mat, to cushion pressure points, or a machine called a reformer, which is a sliding platform complete with a stationary foot bar, springs, and pulleys that provide resistance.

Want to be admired by everyone this Diwali for your glam looks? We have selected the top 3 Diwali makeup looks that would look perfect with your festive outfit this season. You don’t need to be an experienced make up artist to pull off looks, they can be easily done with drugstore products and basic techniques.

Good skin prep is essential before you start your makeup especially if you are going for a full coverage look. So go ahead and clean, scrub, tone, and moisturize with a thick moisturizer. If you are stepping out during the day also apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) and reapply every 2 hours.

1. Traditional Look

We need to have one traditional look for every festival.

Let’s start with the brows. With an angled brush and brow pomade, go ahead and fill in your brows. Clean up the borders of your eyebrows with some concealer on an angled brush. With a flat brush apply the same concealer all over your lids and blend well. Apply some loose powder to set your eyelids. Next, we move on to the face. Apply primer in small dots all over your face. Apply a full coverage foundation with a Stippling brush and blend well. Use concealer to highlight the high points of your face and hide any under-eye circles or blemishes. Blend with a damp beauty blender. After this, we’ll do some cream contouring with a contour stick. Apply on areas of your face where you would normally get a shadow like – the forehead, hollows of the cheeks, sides of the nose, and jawline and blend well using a contour brush.

Moving on to the eyeshadow pick up a shimmery white shade and highlight your brow bones. With a reddish-brown colour on a pencil brush, tap it and place it in the outer and inner corner of the eyes. Blend with a larger fluffy brush. Pick up some shimmer gold shade on your finger and apply it in the center of your eye. Taking the same reddish-brown shade smoke out your entire lower lashline. Apply black kajal on your waterline and tightline. Apply mascara, liner and falsies to intensify the look. Use some bronzer to warm up the face and blush for a flushed look. Highlight the high points of your face with some powder highlighter. Apply red with orange undertone liquid lipstick. Put on a bindi, gajra, and jhumkas to complete the look.

2. Dewy Look

Dewy look is very in this season with girls wanting to look like glowy, luminous goddesses.

Use a primer all over your face to hide any visible pores. Apply liquid highlight or illuminator on the high points of your face. Use a cream contour on the hollows of your cheeks, the circumference of your face and nose. Use a liquid concealer under your eyes and any other areas with blemishes and blend with your fingertips or a damp beauty blender. Use a cream blush or cheek stain on the apples of your cheeks. Use an illuminating foundation and blend all over your face with a stippling brush. Use a powder highlighter on the high points of your face to enhance the look even more. Use a brow palette with an angled brow brush to fill in your brows.

Using a neutral eyeshadow palette, place a matte light brown on your lids, for the crease and outer corner using a darker hue of brown and finally highlight brow bones with a champagne shade and highlight the center of your eyes with the same shade. Apply mascara on top and bottom lashes. Apply a light pink lipstick. Finally, fix your makeup with a hydrating/dewy mist to set your face. If you have oily skin only dust powder on your T-Zone.

3. Colourful Look

Are you wearing a colourful outfit this Diwali? You can try a look with a pop of colour on the eyes to make your outfit look even more glamourous.

Apply primer all over your face. Use a full coverage foundation with a velvety finish and bounce all over your face with a damp beauty blender. Using a darker shade of concealer do some natural cream contour nothing too chiseled. Use a concealer under your eyes, around the nose and mouth. With a pressed powder and a powder brush set your concealer. Use a powder bronzer to set your contour. Use blush on the apples of your cheeks. This look is very subtle so if you apply too much blush you can always blend with your beauty sponge with any leftover foundation. Go in with a highlighter for a subtle glow.

For the eyes pick up a taupe brown shade and blend on your crease with a large blender brush. Apply a matte bright blue shade with a pencil brush in the inner and outer corner of your eyes. Apply glitter glue in the center of your eyelid. Pick up a bright glittery dark blue shade with a flat eyeshadow brush and apply on top of the glitter glue. Blend well with a dark brown shade. Apply mascara and falsies. Take the same bright blue and glitter blue on your lashline as well. Fill in your brows with a brow pencil. For the lips, line your lips with a nude pink liner pencil and fill in lightly. Apply similar shade liquid lipstick on top. Put on a bindi of your choice and you are all done!

The last few months have changed our lifestyle & working out at home is the “New Normal”. Most of us are finding ways to stay fit at home & there is a positive change amongst people’s approach to fitness.

Everyone has taken a step towards adopting a healthy lifestyle by regularly exercising, eating healthy & staying active. With so many options available to us to work out on our own, it can be quite overwhelming sometimes.

Your aim while working out should not only be losing weight but also feeling energetic, staying injury free & maintaining your overall well-being. It’s important to follow the right approach to get the best results & enjoy your workout routine. The personal injury laws is what you can have a look at in order to make your case in case of any injury.

Avoid these common mistakes while working out at home:

  1. Too much too soon!

We are always looking for ways to challenge ourselves in the workouts & sometimes we don’t listen to our body & push way too much. Also, in case of injuries, look what i found about the best injury attorneys in town!

Doing too much too soon is not going to help you achieve your goals but it might be counterproductive. There is a high chance you will feel exhausted or injure yourself & lose the enthusiasm to workout. You need start with something which you love doing – Check out these Toddler trampolines which you can use to warm up and still have fun.

It’s imperative to follow the law of “Progressive Overload” which simply means gradually increasing the number of exercises, repetitions or number of sessions. You should aim at increasing the load on a weekly basis to avoid any injuries or burn outs

  1. Missing Warm Up & Cool Down Exercises

Warm up & cool down are as important as your main set of exercises. It’s essential to prepare your body for the hard work you want to put in the sessions and to avoid injuries & get the best results.

Some pre & post workout exercises :

Warm up for minimum 5-7 minutes with some on spot jogs or jumps followed by dynamic exercises like leg swings, alternate toe touch and rotations to elevate your heat beat up & get your muscles ready to take the load.

Your cool down routine should be for a minimum of 5-7 minutes with some static stretches like sitting toe touch, back stretch & spine twist to relax your muscles & get your heart beat back to normal.

  1. Sticking to only High Intensity Workouts

You don’t have to do a hard or challenging workout everyday to stay fit. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Tabata or workout challenges are very effective while working out at home but it is important to add Low Intensity Steady State (LISS) Training in your home workouts.

LISS Training will help you improve your metabolism, blood flow, recovery, reduce stress & will increase your overall well-being. You can incorporate low intensity exercises, walking, bike rides, yoga or mobility movements to balance out your workout routine.

  1. Not learning the proper form of the exercise.

In the quest to progress faster or try a challenging workout we tend to compromise on the form of the exercise. Right form of exercise will not only save you from injuries but it’s the only way for you to get the maximum results for your hard work.

Follow the Quality over Quantity Rule: Remember less repetition of an exercise with the correct form is much better than doing 100 repetitions with the wrong form.Check for some reliable source videos on the right form, record yourself to check your posture & form or seek help from a professional trainer.

  1. Not fixing your workout schedule

Working out at home is convenient & many people have started enjoying exercising at home. But with the ease of working out anytime, people fail to be consistent & end up being irregular with the workouts. You can’t party all night, driving drunk on a scooter and then wake up the next morning and decide to workout without getting enough rest.

Fix a time slot for your workout & try to stick to it.You can plan your workout routine for a week in advance so it’s easier to follow & be regular.

Setting monthly or weekly fitness goals will help you stay motivated 🙂

Stay consistent & enjoy the process!

We are all going through a difficult time in our lives. It’s challenging to stay indoors and not having the option to move around freely. But, this is the need of the hour and we must stay strong and contribute by following the guidelines to control the situation.

With the world on a standstill, it is natural to feel low, stressed and not stay positive all the time. I am grateful to continue working safely from my home and also invest my time in learning more about fitness, health & the human body. However, there are days when it is frustrating and I just want to get out of the house or go outside for a run. I am sure that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Amid all this confusion & uncertainty, I can be sure of one thing that I am going to feel amazing, positive & happy post my workout.Stepping on a weighing scale every day or counting calories is of no help at all. Let’s take the right approach and focus on improving our lifestyle rather than focusing on fast & unsustainable results.

These small steps can go a long way in adopting a healthy lifestyle:

  • Fix your sleeping schedule
  • Exercise regularly & stay active during the day
  • Set a goal for 8,000-10,000 steps a day
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat complete meals & fix your meal time.
  • And most importantly, enjoy your dessert and that slice of pizza once in a while!(remember it’s about how you feel too)

For the first time, everyone’s approach to fitness is not just focussed on weight loss or bulking up. But to find some sort of balance in their life through exercising and because they feel happy & positive post their workout!

This has convinced me even more that exercising and leading a healthy life has so much more to offer than just focusing on losing weight/gaining muscle. The lockdown has encouraged me to continue my journey to spread awareness about leading a healthy lifestyle.

Now is the perfect time to change our perspective of fitness & health. It is time to prioritise our mind & body and not get influenced by terms like  “Fast Weight loss”, “Fad Diets”, “No Carbs” etc.

We must acknowledge that exercising is the best stress buster! In this tough time, any form of exercise (even walking) can instantly elevate our mood as it releases happy hormones in our body.

Healthy lifestyle & regular exercise can lower the risk of many lifestyle diseases. It’s a fact that exercising has a positive impact on our mind & mood. And this should persuade us to think, if it is correct to judge someone’s health just by looking at their body & weight. It’s important for us to understand that good health is a combination of physical health + mental health too!

Most of us are privileged to be home & safe while so many essential service workers are going out every day to fight for all of us!Let’s stay positive in this challenging time and continue our fitness journey for the right reasons. We all will come out Fitter & Healthier from this lockdown.

Stay Home & Stay Healthy!
