Jaipur filmmaker, Manvendra Singh Shekhawat completed his MSc Journalism from Leeds Beckett University UK in 2015. After this, he came back to India and started pursuing the stories which were important but often left untouched by mainstream media. In an exclusive interview with All About Jaipur, he shared the filmmaking journey of his new documentary, ‘Stateless’ which was recently launched by internationally acclaimed actor, Anupam Kher in an online event.

1. What is the documentary ‘Stateless’ about?

A – It is a human story of all the refugees who have been religiously persecuted in Pakistan. They have no option besides leaving and coming to India for shelter. When they come to India, people learn about their hardships, the difficult conditions and the problems that they are facing. It shows their journey which is currently in progress.

2.    Where did you get the inspiration for ‘Stateless’?

A – Documentaries have always been my passion. Before ‘Stateless’, I have worked on several other documentaries on topics like sewage water irrigation, Marwari horses, robotics, etc.  When I got the opportunity to direct this documentary, the exact process was an inspiration for me. I began by researching the refugees. I understood the pain they felt by listening to their stories. It gave me the momentum to showcase their stories to the entire world truthfully. As Shaheed Captain Manoj Pandey PVC once said “Some goals are so worthy, it’s glorious even to fail!”

3.    What was your experience of shooting the documentary?

A – Initially I was not aware about the subject extensively, as very little information was available on public domain.I was unsure of what I was getting into and how the stories would come out. I was not fully prepared to experience the kind of stories I did when I went to Jodhpur and found the people residing there. It was an emotional experience and I found myself on different levels. During the shoot, we were living, eating and laughing together. I could also understand and relate to their pain.

4.    How long did it take? Did you face any challenges?

A – It was a process of few months for me.Initially, I had to research the topicthoroughly, through online mediums and activists working in this area.I had to find main subjects who could come on camera and speak on the issue.Shooting in really hot conditions in Jodhpur was also a challenge. But somehow because our team was from Jaipur we could handle the heat. Hardships came every step of the way but we worked together as a team and had the determination to work for a good cause.

5.    How was the launch of the documentary?

A – It was a great event in which every one from the team and many guests were present. Veteran actor, Anupam Kher was the chief guest of the event.  He appreciated the movie as he could also understand the pain of leaving one’s home and moving elsewhere.  He said that more such stories have to come out for people’s viewing and to help people understand and create awareness of such causes.

6.    Any message for the viewers?

A – It is time India should have its own documentary filmmaking school where people can learn the art of making non-fiction films.  The temperament of the country is changing with people viewing a wide variety of content online. If a good quality documentary gets eyeballs then there is a lot of scope for many stories to come out across the world.

An interactive session on ‘Role of the Journalist during Pandemic’ was organised virtually with senior journalist, Dr. Tabeenah Anjum on 21 May. The session was organized by the School of Media and Communication, Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ). Dr. Anjum is an internationally acclaimed visual storyteller and recipient of the National Award in Photography conferred by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The session discussed how journalism has transformed during the pandemic, the infodemic of misinformation during Covid, story ideas for journalists to take up, following one’s story, and the role of a journalist.

Dr. Tabeenah Anjum

Talking about the challenging role of a journalist during the pandemic, Dr. Anjum said that the journalist’s role as a gatekeeper becomes even more challenging during the infodemic crisis the nation is facing during the pandemic. They are not extraordinary beings. Everyone is looking after their own safety. If a journalist is stepping out and doing ground reporting they have to take the necessary precautions to ensure that they are not bringing the virus back home with them. This has also been a revolutionary time for the journalist who is suddenly a one-man army with challenges such as information blockade, shut offices and lack of resources. The need for independent journalism has also grown. A journalist needs to able to write, design infographics, take picture and videos, be active on social media, and have a podcast or a blog all on their own.

She further said that balanced reporting is the need of the hour during a pandemic. A journalist must listen to all sides and cross-check and information. They should not be in a hurry to publish a story. They must put their safety first, be informed about the rapidly changing environment, and have knowledge of equipment and tools. Similarly, a journalist should produce high-quality stories, remain calm and not panic in difficult situations. During the pandemic both traditional and non-traditional media play significant roles in keeping the people informed, safe and connected.

Sharing her experience of handling SOS calls in the past month, Tabeenah said that in these distressing times, a journalist can also play an important role of a communicator and influencer. “Right from amplifying the tweet, fetching the leads for oxygen, beds and medicine and connecting the patient with the administration, journalists can actively participate in the volunteer work as they know whom to contact”, said Tabeenah who herself has been helping Covid patients through her Twitter handle. In fact, she has been handling multiple SOS calls and messages every day, even at odd hours of the night. Social media has become a very important tool to help people in distress and journalists should put out all government orders, and verified information under one thread.

Two ex-students of Dr. P.K. Wanchoo, former Head of the Oncology and Surgical Department at SMS Medical College in Jaipur,  have compiled the memories and anecdotes of their mentor and teacher in a book entitled: ‘Footloose Amongst Memories’. Jaipur-based Dr. Sandeepan Mukul and Dr. Pooja Mukul were undergraduate students in Surgery of Dr. Wanchoo  at the SMS Medical College.  Later, Dr. Sandeepan also did his Masters in Surgery under Dr. Wanchoo. The book (for private circulation ) is a hugely readable compilation of his anecdotes, musings and memories. Each of the anecdotes brings a smile or a chuckle to the reader as he goes through the book. He narrates that when Farooq Abdullah was studying at the SMS Medical College in 1955, he was Wanchoo’s dissection partner in Anatomy. They had become good friends.  He recalls that Farooq was ragged so badly that he ran away to Delhi and went and complained to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru himself. Nehru then rang up the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mohan Lal Sukhadia who then, in turn, spoke to the Principal of SMS Medical College, Dr. R.M. Kasliwal. Dr. Kasliwal then transferred Farooq Abdullah to the senior hostel whereafter he was not ragged. He also recalls that while Farooq Abdullah was the Chief Minister of J&K, he was invited to SMS Medical College as the chief guest in 1987. He was upset not seeing his former Principal Dr. Kasliwal, who had not been invited to the event’. He went personally to Kasliwal’s house to bring him to the event. And later he also went to drop him back personally. Yet another story is of how Dr. S.C. Mehta was brought by the Prime Minister of Jaipur, Mirza Ismail and asked to set up a hospital in the Pink City. The land was donated by Maharaja Man Singh on which the present SMS Medical College and hospital are located. It was earlier known as the Willingdon Hospital. Dr. Mehta played a pivotal role in the setting up of the hospital not only in Jaipur but also in Bikaner.

The book makes lucid reading with a lot of memories relating to his studying in the UK, his love for all things British including cricket. Trained in Cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in  the USA, he worked for close to 30 years at the SMS Medical College and retired in 1996. He now lives with his son at Gurgaon.

Sandeepan Mukul is Director, Plastic Surgery, at Fortis Escorts hospital in Jaipur and his wife, Pooja Mukul, a Rehabilitation Physician is Technical Director, BMVSS – Jaipur Foot Organization and works for people with locomotor challenges. They say Dr Wanchoo was their favourite teacher and the book is a gift for his friends, family and well wishers. They will shortly be coming out with an e-book as well.

Want to be admired by everyone this Diwali for your glam looks? We have selected the top 3 Diwali makeup looks that would look perfect with your festive outfit this season. You don’t need to be an experienced make up artist to pull off looks, they can be easily done with drugstore products and basic techniques.

Good skin prep is essential before you start your makeup especially if you are going for a full coverage look. So go ahead and clean, scrub, tone, and moisturize with a thick moisturizer. If you are stepping out during the day also apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) and reapply every 2 hours.

1. Traditional Look

We need to have one traditional look for every festival.

Let’s start with the brows. With an angled brush and brow pomade, go ahead and fill in your brows. Clean up the borders of your eyebrows with some concealer on an angled brush. With a flat brush apply the same concealer all over your lids and blend well. Apply some loose powder to set your eyelids. Next, we move on to the face. Apply primer in small dots all over your face. Apply a full coverage foundation with a Stippling brush and blend well. Use concealer to highlight the high points of your face and hide any under-eye circles or blemishes. Blend with a damp beauty blender. After this, we’ll do some cream contouring with a contour stick. Apply on areas of your face where you would normally get a shadow like – the forehead, hollows of the cheeks, sides of the nose, and jawline and blend well using a contour brush.

Moving on to the eyeshadow pick up a shimmery white shade and highlight your brow bones. With a reddish-brown colour on a pencil brush, tap it and place it in the outer and inner corner of the eyes. Blend with a larger fluffy brush. Pick up some shimmer gold shade on your finger and apply it in the center of your eye. Taking the same reddish-brown shade smoke out your entire lower lashline. Apply black kajal on your waterline and tightline. Apply mascara, liner and falsies to intensify the look. Use some bronzer to warm up the face and blush for a flushed look. Highlight the high points of your face with some powder highlighter. Apply red with orange undertone liquid lipstick. Put on a bindi, gajra, and jhumkas to complete the look.

2. Dewy Look

Dewy look is very in this season with girls wanting to look like glowy, luminous goddesses.

Use a primer all over your face to hide any visible pores. Apply liquid highlight or illuminator on the high points of your face. Use a cream contour on the hollows of your cheeks, the circumference of your face and nose. Use a liquid concealer under your eyes and any other areas with blemishes and blend with your fingertips or a damp beauty blender. Use a cream blush or cheek stain on the apples of your cheeks. Use an illuminating foundation and blend all over your face with a stippling brush. Use a powder highlighter on the high points of your face to enhance the look even more. Use a brow palette with an angled brow brush to fill in your brows.

Using a neutral eyeshadow palette, place a matte light brown on your lids, for the crease and outer corner using a darker hue of brown and finally highlight brow bones with a champagne shade and highlight the center of your eyes with the same shade. 3. Colourful Look

Are you wearing a colourful outfit this Diwali? You can try a look with a pop of colour on the eyes to make your outfit look even more glamourous.

Apply primer all over your face. Use a full coverage foundation with a velvety finish and bounce all over your face with a damp beauty blender. Using a darker shade of concealer do some natural cream contour nothing too chiseled. Use a concealer under your eyes, around the nose and mouth. With a pressed powder and a powder brush set your concealer. Use a powder bronzer to set your contour. Use blush on the apples of your cheeks. This look is very subtle so if you apply too much blush you can always blend with your beauty sponge with any leftover foundation. Go in with a highlighter for a subtle glow.

1900 – 2016

The design patterns, techniques of dyeing and weaving are analysed to highlight the variety, complexity, and adaptability of the handmade.

Textile & India

Fabrics are to South Asia what porcelain is to china. Cotton was first spun into thread in the subcontinent in the third millennium BC. The availability of natural resources such as dyes and fibers, coupled with diverse cultural patterns; interactions between indigenous tribes, traders, explorers, invaders, led to the development of varied and specialized textile skills with almost every region having its own textile specialty.

Tracing the origins of Dari Weaving in India

Transcending social boundaries, the dari was used by commoner and royalty alike: at its simplest it was a multi-purpose textile used as floor covering, bedding or packaging, while at its most elaborate it was woven with the finest fibers and enhanced by gold wrapped thread gracing the palaces of royalty.

Floral Daris

There is a relation between daris with floral motifs and Mughal carpet designs. Carpets with scrolling vines and blossoms and no figural imagery date from the beginning of the 17th century Iran, and were called the Herat type. The Indian versions of these carpets (click here to find out more), introduced in the Mughal courts were often simplified versions of heart designs. Although these designs are eye-catching, they have to undergo a round of cleaning from carpet cleaning knoxville , to maintain their shine and grace. There are carpet cleaning professional that can help you with taking care of your carpet.

Geometric Dari

Geometric daris served as outdoor floor coverings during religious festivals, gatherings or encampments; as indoor floor coverings in the month of spring and autumn when marble or tiled floors were too cold to be left bare and too warm to be covered by carpets.

Daris in the Modern World

As the Indian nation state grapples with substantial poverty the seriously underprivileged craftsmen still continue to work on traditional horizontal looms. These artisans struggle to make ends meet as they are undercut by powerlooms that provide tawdry replicas of their artwork. Moreover, modern India has hugely undervalued its craftsmanship for decades, whole communities of dari weavers have been deskilled, in many cases, hand-making has remained an exercise where human hands are merely put through mechanical motions of making with little imagination and creative liberty involved. However, with the liberalization of the Indian economy, and globally at a time when crafts have returned with a growing force to colour the theory of design, a positive trend has emerged in the country where entrepreneurs, designers artists are collaborating with traditional craftsmen to construct new traditions of craftsmanship within a fresh, contemporary framework. A craft technology dialogue is ensuing where technology does not simply replace the hand; rather, the two come together in a way that augments innovation and expression.
