OF LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS AND DREAMS

Step into a captivating realm where a rather bizarre café becomes the rendezvous point for encounters with your past and future selves and coffee gracefully assumes the role of a metaphor, eloquently embodying the ever-evolving aspirations that accompany the human journey through life.
This is the story that unfolded this weekend in the Rangayan auditorium of Jawahar Kala Kendra as the play ’Tumhare Baare Mein’ written and directed by actor-director, Manav Kaul was staged. This artistic and literary endeavour of Kaul weaves together a rich mosaic of diverse elements. Echoing the author’s own personal odysseys, from the depths of introspective solitude to the birth of captivating plays, from whispered narratives exchanged in profound silence to the vibrant realm of Instagram writing, and from the various stages of the writing process, this work captures the essence of creative exploration in all its forms.

 Complexities of life & emotions

The narrative of the play unfolds with the intertwined stories of three couples, each existing in parallel realms that mirror one another’s present, future, and past. Their interconnectedness is akin to a tapestry, meticulously woven to depict the intricacies of their lives. The opening scene transports us to a café that has poetic verses strewn all over the floor. The characters Iti, Charu, and Sheel eagerly await the arrival of their respective partners, Uday, Rohit, and Sameer. As they come together, a symphony of conversations commences, intertwining their destinies.

Glimpse of the play

In the forefront, Sheel and Sameer’s love story unfolds, set against the backdrop of the present. Both passionately strive to mend the bitter strains and challenges that have tested their bond, united in their pursuit of healing. Simultaneously, Iti and Uday carry forth the shadows of their past, entwining their dreams of a future illuminated by the effervescent glow of a new and young love.

However, the relationship between Charu and Rohit appears to be on the verge of a rupture. As the narrative progresses, the audience witnesses Rohit’s relentless efforts to win over Charu’s heart. The echoes of Rabindranath Tagore’s mellifluous song, ‘Tomay Gaan Shonabo’ (I am singing to you), reverberate throughout the play, as if lending voice to the aspirations of the women. Poetic verses such as “Main chidiya banna chahti hoon, main hamesha se udana chahti hoon” (I want to become a bird, to soar freely), serve as poignant expressions of their deepest desires.

Poetic essence comes alive

“Jugnu ki Kahani uske chamakne mai nahi hai. Uski ashli kahani toh uss andhere mai chipi hui hai jise wo do chamkane ke beech mai jeeta hai”

Infusing the performance with the poetic essence of Manav Kaul’s writing, his new verses gracefully manifest as dialogues within the play, enriching the kaleidoscope of emotions. Priyanka Chowdhary, Mansi Bhawalkar, and Sakhi Gokhale beautifully portray the roles of Iti, Charu, and Sheel, respectively, breathing life into their characters. Meanwhile, Kaustub Harit, Ghanshyam Lalsa, and Rishabh Kanti skillfully embody the personas of Uday, Rohit, and Sameer.  While Vikrant Thakkar expertly handled the interplay of lights, Sharad Joshi’s deft touch with music elevated the sensory experience, complementing the unfolding drama on stage.

The play marked the beginning of ‘Kala Sansar…Madhuram’ series of Jawahar Kala Kendra which focuses on music, literature and theater.
